Ned was nine years, 27 weeks, six days and fifty five minutes old when his mother died suddenly of a brain aneurism. Saddened by this, he bent down to his mother's side and touched her. She came back to life and stood up to retrieve a pie from the oven. In reviving his mother, he inadvertently killed his best friend, Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles' father, Charles Charles. Later that evening when his mother tucked him in to tell him a bedtime story, she kissed him tenderly on the forehead and died a second time. When young Ned touched her again, nothing happened. After the funeral of both his mother and Chuck's father, Young Ned's father drove him off to the Longborough School for Boys and he never heard from his father ever again other than one Halloween postcard informing young Ned that his father had moved. And by moved, young Ned discovered that meant his father had a new wife and new sons as well as a new home.

Ned has a special gift: touch something once and it comes back to life. Keep it alive for more than a minute, something else dies in its place. Touch it again, dead forever. For this reason he is a vegetarian because if he were to eat a dead thing, it would come back to life in his mouth. That would be just, well, horrible as you can imagine. To feel closer to his mother, he baked pies at the boarding school, which prompted him to open the shop, The Pie Hole. He bakes pies because the processes and smells of the making and baking remind him of his dear dead mother. He works with Olive Snook, who repeatedly tries to get him out of his comfort zone of aloneness by subtly hinting of her love and yearning for him. To her curiosity, he never touches his dog, Digby. In fact, due to his 'gift', Ned doesn't like touching at all.

After the traumatic experiences of childhood, Ned will have come to dislike social interaction and will have preferred strict rules. The very word 'change' will have discomforted him and he would rather it be 'tightly wound' instead of a 'shapeless mass with room for surprises'. He will write letters to his future self telling himself to never forget his father's actions in abandoning him, the empty promise of coming back for him and will have become bitter towards his father. He will never know that the man in a ragged old fishing hat who sits in the corner of The Pie Hole and drinks coffee with one sugar cube and two packets of creamer, and prefers a rather large slice of bumbleberry with cool whip is, in fact, his dear old dad.
