Washi is a style of paper that was first made in Japan. Washi is generally tougher than ordinary paper made from wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts. Origami, Shodo, and Ukiyo-e were all produced using washi. Washi was also used to make various everyday goods like clothes, household goods, and toys as well as vestments and ritual objects for Shinto priests and statues of Buddha.
Yet another day of scrupulous work passes by, one of those plain days simply devoted to precise folding and pinching and all those sorts of things. The master origami folder walks away from his work desk, having completed his latest design. The newest origami stretches and takes his first step, tapping his canine paw onto a brass nameplate that reads ‘Washi’.

“That’s… my.. name? Washi… Washi.” He reads the tag out loud and his tail perks up, wagging as fast as he can manage. Washi bounces around a little before declaring, “That’s my name! I’m Washi!” He lets out a short and content sigh before calming down a bit. “I am Washi... but where am I? What is this strange and new place?” Washi trots around the desk, his little paper paws making tapping noises on the wood. He stops abruptly, and he slips a little as he tries to get a grip on the surface. With his paws poised triumphantly, almost over the lip of the desk’s corner, Washi gets his first look at the rest of the room. His eyes widen as far as they will go.

“Wow!” Washi takes several more quick looks around the room, simply awestruck. “This place is huge!” He takes another step before realizing, too late, that there’s no more mahogany desk. He topples headfirst over the edge. The patter of paper on the floor fills the room, but all the other origami cannot help. They’re as lifeless as the bookshelf they sit on. A yowl pierces the stagnant air, and a ferocious beast peers around the corner, its eyes glinting. A tabby cat glares at Washi, stalking forwards steadily and slowly, its tail lashing through the air. Washi quakes in fear and is rooted to the spot, shivering in his paper fur from head to tail. The tabby bats Washi and he flies underneath the desk. It begins to stalk forward for another blow when the origami folder returns to shut off the lights.

“Oh, my dear Washi... how did you get down here?” He gently places Washi back onto the table after refolding his paws and tail. “There...” The master folder turns around to turn off the lights and aims a kick at the cat before it runs off, yowling. “Have a good night’s rest, little Washi.” The folder winks coyly and then the lights are turned off. All is dark.
