tyromancy;; fortelling the future by observation of the fermentation and coagulation of cheese...

The young rat scurried across the hard asphalt wanting to be alone. The night air was cool and crisp and he tried to focus on safely getting to his favorite place. He had just suffered through another traumatizing endeavor in which he was made fun of by his siblings. He was used to the insults and usually his brothers and sisters were just joking. Only they weren’t just jokes to him. What they said hurt his feelings, even after hearing them so often. He realized he was different, smaller, weaker, and slower than the rest but and it had never really bothered him. But the way they talked about him did. So he had left. They called after him but the young rat did not care for their apologies. Tyro paused, sniffing the city air. While other rats would call it strong and foul, Tyro was always able to pick out the delicious scents of food mingling with the humans. Surely finding a snack would calm his nerves. He ran faster, occasionally walking on his back legs as he had seen the humans do. Tyro often saw people; people did not like rats much because they thought they were dirty and stole food. He still liked to be around them to understand their ways and language. Tyro only took food that was going to be thrown out. As he walked along, the thought of his favorite food made is mouth water. He loved cheese, all different kinds. The mild, hole filled Swiss, spicy pepper jack, sharp cheddar, creamy brie, he would indulge in it all.

Tyro dropped back to all fours and pricked his ears when he had found a good hiding spot near the shop. He came here quite often before other rats that waited well into the hours of night to pick through bins. Tyro did not like looking through garbage that had been sitting for long. He came early when he knew the humans were leaving and ate what had just been disposed of so it was still fresh and clean. As far as he knew, this particular shop sold mainly ingredients such as meats, vegetables, and cheeses. Everything was always fresh and delicious; it was popular among the people. The owner was standing outside with a lit stick in his mouth. With it he drew in a breath then blew out smoke. Tyro did not understand what the man was doing with the stick but it fascinated him. The rat could pick out quite a few human words, a skill not many of his brethren had cared to develop, and he listened to the familiar man speak to his employee.

“Well, we’ve got everything cleaned and ready for the morning. Throw out that cheese; tonight was the last night to use it. It’s not bad so take home what you want since we can’t sell it.”

The employee nodded then entered the shop to do as he was told. Tyro’s heart skipped a beat when he heard the word ‘cheese’. What kind would it be? Maybe several different kinds? The anticipation was almost too much and he wanted to squeak with joy.

The cheese was thrown out, still in its wrapping, and the humans left. Tyro scampered up into the bin, which took great effort, but he knew it was worth it. The bin was very full so he was in no danger of falling in too far. The cheese was right at the top, just a couple triangles about his size. The worker must have taken some home because there was usually more. He went to work shoving the cheese out of the bin and watching it fall to the ground. He carefully made his way down and examined his precious bundle. He bit into the wrapping, his teeth easily puncturing the clear wrap. He used his front paws to rip it off, the smell of the cheese overpowering his senses.

“Wigmore,” Tyro murmured, pleased with his selection. He ran his claw over the surface making an indent. While most rats know cheese is cheese, Tyro knows the different types and grades of cheese and even a little of the origins. Wigmore cheese is soft, creamy, and mild, a perfect choice for those who want something to compliment their meal. It comes from a ewe, a sheep, and is made by hand. Tyro licked his claw, savoring in the flavor.

“Maybe I should take some home,” he whispered. He shook his head, “No, they wouldn’t appreciate it the way I do, Let them eat their garbage.”

He began to eat, breaking off small chunks in his paws to put in his mouth, watching for danger such as cats or rats from another clan. Just as he was about to take another bite, he froze and dropped the Wigmore. The vision lasted only a moment, enough time for him to see his fate. He was cornered against a garbage bin and a black cat stood in front of him tense and ready to spring. The vision was cloudy, like he was looking into a haze, and he did not understand it. When it finished, he squeaked with surprise and backed into the leg of the garbage bin. The contact scared him and he turned, anticipating seeing something awful. He stared at the cheese in wonder but before he could gather his thoughts, he heard a soft purr from the other side of the alley.

“Hello rat, aren’t you going to share?” he heard the cat before he saw it.

She was lean and all black except for a white patch on her chest. The cat from his vision! She padded closer, only a few feet away staring intently at Tyro. He took in a sharp breath, his heart beating loud and fast in his chest. He hadn’t seen the end so maybe he could change his fate if he moved quickly.

“Are you scared, rat?”

Tyro didn’t have time to think. He ran to the Wigmore, grabbed a chunk of it in his mouth, and took off towards home. The cat followed in quick pursuit but gave up when he dove into the entrance of a rain gutter.

“Next time, pest.”

And with that, she turned and left Tyro gasping for breath. He had to get home, had to figure out what had just happened. Had he just seen the future? He must have. But how and why? Questions ran wild through his mind.

He entered his nest, ignoring the concerned looks of his siblings.

“Hey, are you okay?” One sister asked.

He nodded and left some cheese for her then went to find a quiet place. Tyro kept to himself for a few days. Even his siblings left him alone. He focused on having another vision but none came to him. He couldn’t keep this to himself any longer. Maybe they would help him. Or maybe they would hate him more. Finally he made an announcement to his clan. Nervously, he scrambled onto the high place where his father, the leader of the clan, spoke out to all the rats. His siblings sneered at him, but others were supportive and curious as to what Tyro wanted to say.

“I want to share something with you all. It might be hard to believe, but just hear me out.”

His voice shook as he told the story of the cheese he ate and the cat in the vision he had seen before he even sensed her. Some rats mocked him, others looked fearful. He thought they would kick him out to fend for himself. His father spoke when he was finished and Tyro waited for the harsh words from his leader. Instead his father defended Tyro, telling the clan that he had once met a rat with a similar gift before. Still, the other rats were skeptical and it only made the usual insults worse. Tyro played it off, all he cared about was seeing another vision though he hadn’t touched the Wigmore since that night. The chunk was wrapped in a leaf under his bed of twigs and feathers. His sister cautiously approached him and sniffed his chunk of cheese.

“Is it true? What you told everyone?” she asked.

“Why would I lie? I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t had the vision. It saved my life, as scary as it was.”

His sister nodded then said, “I believe you. I always knew you were special. Our brothers and sisters will never understand but I want to be here for you.”

Tyro felt warmth spread throughout is body and he stammered as he thanked her. He offered her some cheese as he wished to finish it off before it molded.

He inhaled about to take a bit then gasped as another vision came to him. He was garbed in fabric, like the humans, and the other rats surrounded him whispering excitedly. In front of him, some sort of cheese, the source of his power maybe? Again, the vision only lasted a moment and he didn’t realize he was holding his breath until he looked into his sister’s wide eyes.

“What’s wrong?” she asked excitedly. “Did you have another vision?”

All Tyro could do was nod. He was sure he knew what it meant.

“Well, what happened?” she asked.

Tyro smiled. “I can’t tell you but I think you will know soon enough.”
