"This is not how it is done," Camile paced back and forth between the marble statue of The Goddess and the little girl, who didn't seem to notice anything but the book in her arms. Though a large tome, it looked clownishly big in the hands of a child. Camile stomped to a halt in front of the girl, who was too absorbed in the book to take any notice. "The next priestess is supposed to find the temple herself, and claim the tome herself by proving that she can control it," The child shrugged.
"If I was strong enough," she mulled, "Then so is she." Camile pawed and the ground indignantly. She wasn't sure what irritated her more, the fact that the ancient ritual had been disturbed, or that the one with the power to do so couldn't be more than ten.
"That should be for me to judge! I must see proof of her abilities! I cannot serve a priestess without any such confirmation of her- Wait! Where are you-"
"If you don't want to serve her, then don't," The girl's eyes and voice were dull with disinterest. She tucked the book into her pack and pulled her hood down sharply. "You weren't exactly advertised as a packaged deal."
"W-well, perhaps not, but the priestess will need my guidance to control the-"
"She's a big girl," The tiny figure turned to face Camile. Her dark robes were silhouetted sharply against the churning, luminous backdrop of the sandstorm. "She'll figure it out." Camile's hands shook. She'd been given strict instructions. Whoever could reach the book could claim it. She wasn't allowed to interfere. But without the book, and without the priestess...
"And what am I to do then?" Catching the desperation in her voice, the child's expression seemed to soften a little... but only just. The girl beckoned wordlessly for Camile to follow. As they stepped out into the open, the sandstorm came to an abrupt stop. The child spun around, staring in wonder as the tiny grains of luminous sand came to a halt and swirled down like snowflakes. Camile smiled as she brushed a small drift off of her bare shoulders, happy to have made an impression at last.
