You live long enough
to hear the sound of guns,
long enough
to find yourself screaming every night,
long enough
to see your friends betray you...

The corner of the room where she sat was dark so all that Kristian could see was her shadow in the chair, trembling while sobbing. "I promise you we didn't know that you were still alive, if we had known..." The woman's voice was interrupted by the loud noise that his fist caused as it slammed against a big old cabinet next to him. "Shut up, Stephanie! There's no need to tell me that. I don't care for your lies and I'm not here for smalltalk, you know?" Slowly his left hand reached under his shirt, pulling out a silver chain with a strange-looking amulet attached to it. "What are you doing, Kris? Say something!" Stephanie's voice was hysteric, she tried to get up from the chair but it felt like an invisible weight would hold her down. Before she could open her mouth again she saw a faint blue light coming from Kristian's direction - the amulet.

"So, you want me to say something?" Slowly Kristian took a step forward and a condescending smile appeared on his face. "Let's see...how about have a good time, Steph?" At the same second the amulets' glow became brighter and a pitch-black cloud emanated from it that seemed to smudge the true shape of something inside of it. With an enormous speed the cloud moved over to the woman in the chair, engulfing her before she had the chance to scream. It took not even a minute, then the cloud abandoned its victim and returned to the amulet. "I thank you." Kristian said in a low voice as he hid the silver chain under his shirt again. Once that was done he looked over to Stephanie who still sat in the chair. Motionless. Withered. Dead?

While looking down at the mummified body memories came up in Kristian's mind. Seven years had passed already but still everything seemed so real. His first excavation abroad in a newly discovered underground temple complex in Western Asia. The collapsing cealing of the main hall that had locked him in and his failed attempts to find another exit; a frightened fool stumbling around in the darkness. Then that soft blue light on the floor, a little amulet he picked up and the creature he awakened by doing so. Yes, it was him who saved his life, not his so-called friends. When he reached the surface again he realized that the excavation site was abandoned, apparently no one had made any effort to rescue him. His exhaustion turned into anger and with his last ounce of strength he managed to reach the next city. There a short research confirmed his assumption - instead of trying to rescue him they had declared him dead.
The next couple of years the "deceased archaeology student from Sweden" stayed in Western Asia, well-hidden and always in search of answers. Over time he learned more about the amulet and the demon-like creature that was bound to it and the more he learned the more he knew for what he would use his knowledge - revenge. He wanted them to suffer for what they had done to him and the creature's power, turning people into living but immobile mummies, appeared to be a good way for making his wish come true. Today, exactly seven years after the accident, it had begun.

With a short shake of the head Kristian brought himself back to reality. Again he looked down at the body in the chair and he chuckled. "Oh man, Steph my dear old friend! Not to invade your privacy but something tells me that maybe you might want to try another moisturizer~" With these words Kristian left the room and, a few minutes later, Stephanie's house through the back door. Calm and collected he walked down the street, not caring for the heavy rain that had started meanwhile and soaked him. Finally the first one was down and for sure she wouldn't be alone in her state for long...
