In a galaxy far, far away...

As a military mechanic, "V" loved her job of repairing and updating battle ships for the GAR. She got to work with the most advanced technology available to her people, travel to planets most would never see and even a few of the recruits could be pretty fun.
However, after an explosion left her badly injured and falsely accused of negligence, she found herself stripped of any purpose; her title and good reputation had been severed as suddenly as her limbs.
After some time, she managed to find mediocre replacements for both. The lowest markets provided her with enough pieces from malfunctioning robots as well as a disgraced surgeon who was willing to attach them to her. As much as she struggled with the mental and physical recovery, finding a job that allowed her to work on ships again proved even more difficult. The closest the mechanic could manage was a satellite maintenance and diagnostics position for a cheap broadcasting company. For years, V circuited the system, following the weak beacons of her employer's failing property and feeling a little less herself with each day that passed. She began to think replacing solar cells, removing infestations and cataloging machine coordinates would make up the rest of her lonely existence.

It wasn't terribly unusual to find that one of the satellites was damaged by contact with another spacecraft. Sometimes jerk pilots shot them just for fun. Sometimes, if the ship was large enough, it would simply run into them if they felt it was in their way. However... it was pretty rare to find another craft left abandoned. The ship V found circling BT-X09 was old and awkward-looking. She figured it must be someone's amateur restoration attempt, no doubt suffering from engine failure while they were trying to loot parts and left behind as a result. There was still a broken solar array hooked on its stabilizer. The mechanic could tell even without hailing it that the craft was empty.

Dislodging and repairing the satellite were accomplished easily enough within a few hours, despite how much larger the ship proved to be up close. The unique design and craftsmanship of it began to grow on V while she worked. It wasn't quite the scrapheap it appeared to be from a distance; the body was incredibly solid and it was apparently complex enough that it required five people to operate it. The construction seemed versatile and bright paint still glimmered under a layer of filth. She realized, too, that the outer hatch hung wide open, almost as if inviting any random passerby to venture inside. V tried to ignore the foreign craft while she worked, but the more she considered what kind of people would simply abandon such a machine, the more her curiosity grew. She would just take a quick look around before she headed back, she decided.

There was no security system for the hatch and V laughed to herself over how trusting ship manufacturers must have been in the past. The inner door opened without hesitation, meaning the great machine still had power. Her curiosity grew and she stepped inside.

It was a large ship, but there was very little space afforded for cargo or living quarters. The corridors and rooms were lined with dim lights along the floor and wasn't long at all before V found her way to the cockpit. After a quick scan, she removed her helmet to get a less obstructed view. The air was chilly but there weren't any detectable smells or signs of life. The small room looked pristine, really, and V got the impression that it had sat empty for a while. Taking in the details, she was drawn to an odd kind of embedded circuitry that ran along the walls and floors, creating an attractive pattern that seemed to lead to a low dais in the center of the room. She ran the toe of her boot over the engraved lines before smiling and stepping onto the platform.

The room remained lifeless for a moment as V continued to look around when a small but bright beam switched on above her, stunning her a little with it's intensity. The mechanic threw her hand up to guard her eyes, bending to see where the light was coming from when hot ropes of pure energy encircled her feet, winding quickly up her legs. She jumped, startled by the restraints and let out a yelp when every light and screen came to life at once. She looked around fervently, trying to make sense of it when she noticed two more cords of light, leading from opposite pilot chairs, steadily lift from the floor and reach toward her. The coils around her legs began to burn with an intensity and her confusion started to give way to panic. She shouldn't be able to feel anything in her limbs.

More burning, and she had a moment to acknowledge that the new ropes reached her arms before all four of them jerked suddenly and she was left falling as the horrific circuitry tore her limbs away, stealing her body of mobility for a second time in life. The mechanic looked around, dazed. There was an acrid smell in the air and pain that was both unbearable and distant. She watched dully as her replacement pieces were carried away and slowly absorbed by the coils.
Even after the surgery, no one had ever looked at her the same after the accident. Most treated her like glass; others seemed annoyed by her presence, like she was bound to inconvenience them, but still through the physical pain she felt a sadness throb in her chest. As surely as her prosthetics had damned her, they had also saved her life.

Through her tears, V noted another cable extending from the floor behind the center pilot chair and looming over her. There was something less hurried about this one as the energy began to encircle her head, slowly blocking everything else from her senses until there was nothing but light to see and somehow even light to taste and breathe. She sensed the voice before she heard it. It echoed like a jet flying overhead, growing in volume until it hit with an intensity that vibrated from her chest to fingertips which, somehow, still felt connected. It said only five words, but they felt heavier than any she had heard before.

"We belong to you now."
