“ ‘Eh you thar!” a gruff voice calls out to you.

Somehow, in the mad rush of people to claim a spot in the Big Top, you found yourself pushed to the side and caught in unending darkness. The literal light at the end of the tunnel… well it appeared to be the backstage area. And you were just caught where you weren’t supposed to be.

You slowly turn to face the voice, finding a particularly grim looking carnie staring you down. His white hair sticks up in mad spikes and his eyebrows furrow over piercing blue eyes. Compared to all the other colorful characters that you have seen so far working at the famous Cirque de Trèfles, this man is the least cheery. In fact, cheery is the last word you would choose to describe this man.

“Ya shouldn’t be back here! This is personnel only. No outsiders get to learn our tricks,” the man explains harshly.

You barely hear him as you notice the strange amount of pocket watches on the man’s vest and belt. At least a dozen surely… Why would anyone need to keep such careful track of the time?

“Ya hear me?!” the man demands, noticing your wandering eyes. “I do a lota work back here, and we can’t have ya ruining the illusion! Ya audience members aren’t supposed to know that some of the magic is mine. It ruins the act!”

You nod absentmindedly as you count the watches… Ten, eleven, twelve…

“Hey! I’m up here!” the carnie motions to his eyes. “I dun know what yer customs are here, but in I’reland we make eye contact with those we’re talkin’ to!”

“Aw, is ol’ InnDevision ‘ere bothering ya?” asks a red haired man with two different colored eyes as he slings an arm over the angry man’s shoulder. It looks kind of awkward since the red haired man is almost a foot shorter…

“Elbaroda…” the man called InnDevision snarls. “Getcher arm off me! How many time do I have to tell ya?!”

“I hear ya, I hear ya…” Elbaroda, which you assume must be the red haired man’s name, responds, removing his arm. Instead he reaches towards you…. And pulls a furry bunny from off the top of your head. You hadn’t realized there was a bunny on your head… Wait. What? You wonder how in the world it got up there as Elbaroda talks to it. “Silly Clove, you’re supposed ta be on my head. The top hat goes on my head, not theirs.”

You are still utterly befuddled as to what has just taken place when a man whose hand is on fire, another who has so many muscles he looks like a wall, and another stumbling behind them rush by you.

“Almost show time everyone!” the muscular one shouts as he passes by. “Get in yer places!”

“Shut it Tank, the whole audience will hear ya!” snaps a purple haired girl who you recognize from the gate when you first entered the circus. She turns towards you and the two other odd characters who stand before you. “Well, what’re they doin’ here?” she asks, pointing to you. “Inn, take ‘um to their seat please. Elbaroda, ya need ta get yer glitter on…” she directs, pushing the man with his bunny away.

“Now InnDevision. I never thought you would be one to lose track a’ time,” the girl jokes, flicking one of the man’s many pocket watches. Darn it. You forgot to finish them counting earlier…

“Yer gonna run out of time ta get this one back up ta their seat,” she adds as you try to regain focus.

“That’s alright Dramatik. I’ll just stop the time, then we’ll have plenty of it!” he responds. They both burst into laughter and you join them – you want to fit in…

Wait! What did he say?

Suddenly, the scene disappears and you are sitting in a plastic green seat surrounded by the other audience members looking down on the circus ring where a man – the Ring Master – stands, quieting the crowds. How did you get here?

It’s almost as if time stopped and you were just… transported to your seat….
