Before he was a traitor, Saladin was one of the high-ranked guardians of the Kingdom of Heaven. His job, despite its difficulty, was highly sought for by the other angels. Having that position meant you were of complete loyalty to the Lord, and not even sin and its temptation can dissuade you from protecting Heaven. Or so they thought.
One day, a rickety old man was granted entrance to the Kingdom. Little did the inhabitants know that it was the Devil himself. When it was too late, he had already caused havoc inside their district. Fires blazed up from nowhere, spreading like wildfire. The ground underneath them shook violently that cracks started appearing. Saladin watched this with horror, disgusted at himself for what he had done.
When the Devil was finished with his job, he left by the way in which he came. That way, he was able to show all the angels and saints who was responsible. The sickly pale hands of the elder grasped Saladin's arms firmly. Saladin could feel intense heat coursing through his body while the man chanted dark words and phrases. When he finished, he looked back at the Kingdom, smirked, and disappeared.
The punishment that Saladin received for his actions was severe. He recalled how slyly the Devil had tempted him, and how stupid was he to have fallen to his trap.
"You will be granted the life of immortality and strength and power that will be equal to that of the Lord's!" The old man had hissed, his face shaded by the cloak that he wore.
Saladin felt as if he was in a trance as he said, "Then you are granted to have permission to enter the Kingdom of Heaven." Just as the man stepped foot on the kingdom, he looked back at Saladin with his bloodshot eyes. He smiled, displaying an astonishing collection of white fangs. Just as Saladin ran towards him, the old man disappeared, his bloodcurdling laugh echoing around him.
Saladin had talked to one of the Elder Angels, and he had no complaint for his punishment.
"You are already forgiven, Saladin, but now you must pay the consequences of your actions." The angel's eyes narrowed as he spoke, and the words that came next would make any angel of Heaven cower in fear. "I regrettably declare that you are to be banished from the Kingdom of Heaven, so as to contemplate at what you have done. You will cause no more trouble, Saladin, I presume." He added softly after a pause.
"No more." Saladin said, dejection clear on his face.
"You have done this to yourself, Saladin, and no one else is to blame for that but yourself. May God bless you."
Even though the place where they sent him was deserted, with no sign of life seen in a great distance, it luckily had an abandoned storage building in the area. Saladin quickly salvaged whatever he could from the remains, and he got himself flimsy, but reliable weapons.
As time passed, Saladin also noticed that his feathery wings started deteriorating in such as way that it became brown; it seemed as if it was being burned slowly. More punishment? He guessed.
So now Saladin lives on the Earth, surviving and learning the ways of the humans in order to adapt and live.
