Lir refers to an ancient celtic god that ruled the seas.

He had several children including the one that I'm refering this character off of. In this case, I'm referring to Mannanan Mac Lir who took over the job of sea god after his father had died.

He's usually associated as being one of the gods of the Tuatha de Danaan( people of the Danaan) otherwise known as the fairy folk.
His prime modes of movement were said to be rolling around on his three legs to get him from place to place.

His symbol is the celtic triskale and accordingly he had
3 sons and 3 daughters.
The daughters names being:
Aine, Aoife, Grian.
The sons' names being:
Ilbhreac, Fiachna, Gaidiar

He also goes by the name god of the sea and tides.

His symbols include: the triskale, trident, as well as the animals: crane, horse, pig, and the salmon.
He also had several magical possessions which were:a ship that did not need sails called the Wind Sweeper
an invisibility cloak made out of swirling mists
a flaming helmet
a sword named Fragarach that never missed its target
and a horse named Enbarr of the Flowing Winds that could travel over water.
