The sun was still there, but it was on the wrong side of the world. Or the right side, since Erulan wanted it to stay dark like this forever. The stars never left, not really, but when the sun was out, its rays burnt away the night, drowning out the faint glimmer of starlight.
Now, in the dark, cool night, with a breeze gently twining its way through her fur, Erulan could enjoy the stars. She could feel their light filling her with warmth and joy from the tips of ears to end of her tail. Just like getting hot cocoa with her friends. The stars weren't just half-finished stickmen to Erulan, though she could name all eighty-eight of the constellations. They were like lanterns, light posts, guiding her out into the vastness of the universe.
She was going to get there. Someday, she thought, she'd get up there, out there. Someday, she'd surf on a solar wind in a galaxy too far away to see through her telescope. Someday, she'd find the edge of the universe, but until then, she'd lie here in the night, in the grass, staring up into the sky.

The streak of light brought Erulan abruptly out of her nighttime daydreams, honing the sheeta's attention onto the bright ball that was dancing across her skies. It had been a lazy night for the starwatcher, who was content to just lie on her back and let the stars provide a backdrop for her soaring imagination. Occasionally bright, unexpected flashes would interrupt her musings, triggering a deep rooted hope inside her for a proper wishing star to hear her dream. Every child knew that when you wished upon a star, it came true, though once they got to Erulan's age they tended to stop believing.
There had been a time that Erulan, too, had begun to doubt this once undeniable truth, when countless hopes and prayers for adventure and a way to play among the stars went unanswered. She had been on the verge of giving up hope when it finally occurred to her. The relationship between shooting stars and wishes was indeed a concrete fact, the stars themselves just didn't know it. They had probably become confused over the centuries as more airships and spaceships and the like cluttered the sky, accidently receiving the wishes meant for the celestial dancers until the stars assumed that the mortals of the planet had changed their alliegances and beliefs. Ever since that epiphany, Erulan was careful to never direct her wish towards anything but a shooting star. Sometimes her scrutiny of a flying nightsky object cost her the oppurtunity to send her wish, but she was certain that once she convinced the stars that her dreams were meant for them and them alone, the missed chances would be more then made up for once her wish came true.
It wasn't a ship of any sort, she was certain, the smooth curve of its descent was too natural to be from a machine, and the light simply seemed too pure to be from the planet. It had, however, lasted in the sky much longer than any star she'd seen before, the sheeta hesitated for a moment, afraid of risking a wish on what would turn out to be a craft after all, killing any progress she had made with the celestial bodies so far. But there was a warm feeling in her heart and in her mind, urging her to take the chance, and with a deep breath she closed her eyes and willed her thoughts to the light pleading for adventure, pleading to find a way to the ballroom that was the heavens. She opened her eyes just in time to see the light dissapear, it looked for a moment as if it had, in fact, landed on earth, just on the other side of the hill she was laying on, to be exact.
This time there was no reservation in Erulan as she picked herself up onto her feet, racing through the short grass as fast as her legs could go and following something too strong to be hope but was not quite instinct. As she came down the other side of the hill, she saw a spot of grass illuminated, though the light was fading swiftly, and by the time she stumbled to the gift from the heavens it had given way to a small, dark creature not quite like anything Erulan had ever seen before. As she bent on her knees to get a better look, the creature, it turned its eyes to her. For a moment she thought it was crying, before she realized the thing, with fur as dark as a clear night sky, had what could only be miniature constellations seemingly tattooed onto itself. The false starlight shimmering through its markings. It gave a soft, warm hum before it leapt forward and into the startled sheeta's lap before she could react. It felt...right.
"Where are you from, little one?" She asked the creature, cautiously petting it's head. In response it hummed again, looking up at the sky before back to her and nuzzling into her chest, "Wherever it was, it was far, far away." Erulan looked to the heavens, "maybe you'll take me there, take me far, far away."
It hummed once more, perhaps in agreement, perhaps to get her to hold it closer as it closed its eyes and, Erulan could only assume, sleep. It seemed the stars had finally listened.

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
