An impossibility: Jelec's body is made of iron. He tries to keep this fact to himself, but his weight is a liability to his crew. Hejut, his captain and friend, knows and understands. By shuffling awkwardly, Jelec can mask the clang of his feet. Although sailing with him is difficult in smaller vessels, his loyalty to his captain is not questioned.
As the most massive member of his ship, the Commodore, he is one of the crew's main fighters. Although he is an air pirate himself, he considers all bandits and other forms of thieves to be inferior.

"You can't get past me."
Just there, I can see the glint of eyes from beyond that snowdrift. I always try to warn them off, but the attack is inevitable. My task is to guard the gateway to this tomb until my captain returns. Before disembarking the Commodore, Hejut proposed that I should be the guardian; I am immune to most injuries - besides, the crew finds it easier to sail without me. Although I was warned that I will wait a long time, I swore an oath to remain at the entrance, for he assured me he would return.

That promise was made over 800 years ago.

...

Since that day, I've been faithful to my captain, diligently watching the featureless landscape for raid parties. Indeed, it was exciting for me at first - to be away from my ship for once, for once! Feeling the steady ground below me brought indescribable joy; it meant that I was safe from slipstreams and freak storms, hurricanes and fatal heights. Now, as I grow ever more weary of the calm tundra, I long to be an air pirate again and to laugh with my crew. My patience has since eroded away, but my duty to the captain still remains. My lifetime has been exceeded, but the oath refuses to let me die. It prevents me from walking more than a few hundred paces away from the entrance; thus, I cannot run away. I cannot injure myself either, as I have nothing sharp enough to pierce my body.

I've killed thousands upon thousands of hopeful treasure hunters. I grieve that some of their children and their children's children will also lose their lives at my hands as lowly, pitiful thieves, but I respect them as true fighters. To honour their deaths, I store a piece of armour from each warrior; I sometimes wonder if we would have been comrades in arms had we met in a different time and place; they were all forthright and honest in battle.

...

But I can tell this one's different. The sound of a horrible high-pitched whistling noise reaches my ears and the eyes draw closer.
"I know what's in that tomb," a voice sniggers. I then realise that the whistling is meant to be laughter. "I inherited it over 800 years ago, when the captain was crushed before my eyes. Did you even know that Hejut's dead? Ha! Your world has been reduced to this! Have you any idea what has happened over these past centuries? I've seen it all."
A nasty pause. "Wouldn't you like to see as well?"

Snow crunching underfoot, a dark wispy shape makes its way toward me.
I recognise Hacken, one of the crew. Alive, after 800 years?
His tail whips shards of ice into my face as he paces restlessly in a tight circle. "Do you know how long the captain's trap held? An oath binds you, but can you imagine the curse that still holds me? For centuries, my body lay pierced in jaws of iron. He should have just given me what is rightfully mine!"
Sudden realisation hits - I know why the captain had chosen me.
"Has the ice frozen your tongue? Speak. Tell me that you'll join me, and I'll release you."

Release? After 800 years, what a thought! Mind reeling, I turn slowly to face him. He does not know about my secret. A faint smile plays about his lips, as if he knows what I'm going to do, triumph already lighting his hateful eyes. I wet my own lips in anticipation. He's right; I haven't spoken for such a long time. As I open my mouth, my metal teeth catch the light.

"Everything ends here."
