Samuel's father had left 3 months before Samuel was born. He didn't find out until he was 7 years old that his father was in fact in prison, and would never return home. For several years before he was born, his father had committed a series of arson attacks in the town where he and his mother lived.

The last fire killed 5 members of the same family. When Samuel was born, he had three strange marks on him. The mark on his face was most noticable, the other two being on his stomach and leg. The marks were almost in the shape of a flame. From a young age, Samuel had been shunned by the people in his town. He was referred to as the 'spawn of the devil', even though he had no idea what that meant until he was much older.

Now 17 years old, he had been forced to move away from his home town, and found himself homeless, jobless - and alone. His childhood had been a mixture of bullying, loneliness, being called a freak, shunned by everyone. Samuel didn't mind too much that he had been hounded into moving away, he actually preferred it. He was no longer being hounded, shouted at in the street, hunted. He only hoped from now on that no-one would get close to him, no-one would try to get to know him - or his terrible family secret.
