There shouldn't have been any survivors. When the bomb blew it took the entirity of the sector with it. It was either a stroke of luck or terrible misfortune that young Marshe Tendrilion was playing on the outskirts that morning, an act his mother had strictly forbidden. While his family, friends, neighbors, and everyone he'd ever known were instantly killed, he managed to escape death by a hair... even so, the accident left his body shattered and useless. His survival seemed temporary, just a delay of the inevitable. Luck, however, had one more card in store for him.
Marshe was discovered among the rubble, broken and barely breathing, by a uniformed man of the Community. Through his efforts and speed, a medical extraction team was able to pull the boy from death's clutches. But saving his life alone could not restore him. Marshe had suffered terrible injuries in the explosion; it seemed unlikely he would ever be able walk, speak, or function properly again. A boy reduced to a sentient vegetable.
