CR-R-RACK He squeaked his dismay at the cold hardness of the marble floor on which he landed. Not five minutes out of his egg and already he missed its warm security. He could remember sounds heard from within his small dome. A warm voice he had instinctively know as Mother had told him stories of the green world that would be his home and the other fine eggs that would be his brothers and sisters. Even then he'd been able to smell the musky odor of fronds and rich black earth that guarded their nest. That is, until the fire came. He had not had a chance to experience life, but as the smell of molten rock dominated his senses he had expected death. He could hear Mother's fury at the destruction of her nest, and then an unbearable silence fell. He heard nothing more for a very long time. When sensation returned he could smell nothing but cold stones, could hear nothing but the cries of strange animals he had no name for. He tried to cry out but Mother did not answer. There was no one to tell him if the creatures outside the nest were friend or foe and so he waited. He waited until the strange chatter of the strange creatures ceased but he knew his hatching time had come and he could wait no longer. He blinked and shook his head, grumbling at the small sun that illuminated his family nest. Here were the eggshells of his brothers and sisters but they were nowhere to be found. He squealed his alarm at the massive figure that towered over the nest, certain he was about to be devoured. It took him a few moments to realize he could not share thoughts with the massive skeleton before him. He voiced the series that Mother had taught him to be her name but received no response. He reached out to gingerly stroke the fossil and snatched back his hand. The clawed hand was exactly like his own, only much bigger. Instinct told him that nest raiders would not wait long to invade an unguarded nest. The clack of his claws on the smooth floor frightened him into a run. He ran through the Ancient Egypt exhibit and the Roman exhibit, finally stopping to catch his breath at the Magic Show exhibit. A flicker of motion caught his eye. It was another raptor just his size. He ran toward the figure, convinced he must have found a nestmate. The other young one had pink skin with red stripes and light blue eyes well-equipped for seeing in the dark. Every tail twitch and blink was echoed by the stranger in the mirror. The little raptor backed away slowly, greatly relieved when his duplicate did the same. Until now he had given little thought to food. The smell of fresh meat caught his attention and drew him to a room filled with odd, shiny structures. Five pounds of hamburger had been set on the bottom shelf of the fridge for the third graders scheduled for a tour in just a few hours. The door handle proved no challenge to his clever claws and containers that could deter mice were nothing to a hungry raptor. He gobbled the entire amount, grumbling when he ran out. He continued his wandering, hoping to find a few more tasty morsels. The giant lollypop stand with its brightly colored candies caught his eye. He stripped away the plastic wrap on one lolly with a well-aimed swipe, squeaking his pleasure at the sweetness of the candy. He made short work of emptying the display, the only unpleasant surprise a lemon sucker that sent him scrambling to find a water source. Luckily the Egyptian exhibit contained a mock Nile. He was making his way back to the nest when his tail brushed a button on the wall. A voice rose from hidden speakers, startling a snarl from him. Here we have an imitation sarcophagus such as were used in the time of the pharaohs. Touch the interactive screen to your left to learn more. Here, he squeaked. It sounded much like Mother's word for home. He did not belong in this world of harsh sounds and cold, lifeless caves. He needed to be free to roam the green forest, to hunt and sing with his kin. One door in particular had interested him as he made his patrol. Through it he could smell fresh air and just a hint of growing things. He made one last dig through the candy display, coming up with a giant rainbow lolly he had missed. Filled with determination and not a small amount of sugar, the little raptor set forward to test his strength against the door that kept him from his proper forest home. The night watchman was already well into his second bottle. He decided not to tell the museum director about the little pink dinosaur who took out a loading dock door. Story by Pureflower
