Erlkönig (or Erlking) is a name from German folklore for the figure of a spirit or "king of the fairies".

Oh my darling, I'll keep you safe, said the mother, tightly clutching onto her infant sweat collected at her brow, I will not let him get you.

A small girl by the name of Anneliese grew up in a small town called Skjult af Skoven. It was a prosperous town, they always brought in enough wealth for the general population to live comfortably well into their old age. Sickness was a rarity, and the people wanted for nothing. They were surrounded by a large, dense forest, in which all their foes- if they had any- would be lost forever. Everyone lived in large houses that had warm fires to keep them warm through the winters and large windows to open up to cool breezes in the summer.

One hundred years ago, however, it was a very different story. The town was sickly, their buildings falling apart, and it seemed that every day a new criminal came to town to pillage and take whatever they wanted. However, it all changed when the mist settled. It was heavy and seemed to move through the town. When the mist left- all the children in town were gone, and so were the criminals.

He is coming soon, a burly man commented, stretching towards the sun, how many children are eligible?

Ten, a woman commented, rocking a newborn on her hip- they were safe; newborns were ineligible.

One of them is my older brother's daughter?

Little Anneliese, yes,

Poor him, the burly man commented, grabbing his newborn from his mother and hugging him tight, If only she had been born a month later, she just turned five.

You think she will be taken?

It's no secret that the Erlking has a fondness for children from my family.

Who rides there so late through the night dark and drear?
The father it is, with his infant so dear;
He holdeth the boy tightly clasp'd in his arm,
He holdeth him safely, he keepeth him warm.

"My son, wherefore seek'st thou thy face thus to hide?"
"Look, father, the Alder King is close by our side!
Dost see not the Alder King, with crown and with train?"
"My son, 'tis the mist rising over the plain."

"Oh, come, thou dear infant! oh come thou with me!
For many a game I will play there with thee;
On my beach, lovely flowers their blossoms unfold,
My mother shall grace thee with garments of gold."

"My father, my father, and dost thou not hear
The words that the Alder King now breathes in mine ear?"
"Be calm, dearest child, thy fancy deceives;
the wind is sighing through withering leaves."

"Wilt go, then, dear infant, wilt go with me there?
My daughters shall tend thee with sisterly care
My daughters by night on the dance floor you lead,
They'll cradle and rock thee, and sing thee to sleep."

"My father, my father, and dost thou not see,
How the Alder King is showing his daughters to me?"
"My darling, my darling, I see it aright,
'Tis the aged grey willows deceiving thy sight."

"I love thee, I'm charm'd by thy beauty, dear boy!
And if thou aren't willing, then force I'll employ."
"My father, my father, he seizes me fast,
For sorely the Alder King has hurt me at last."

The father now gallops, with terror half wild,
He holds in his arms the shuddering child;
He reaches his farmstead with toil and dread, –
The child in his arms lies motionless, dead.
