A character by Jane
Max was eight. He wore glasses. He was chubby. He loved to read.

Max was also bullied. A lot. And he didn't have a friend in the world - until he met Eddison.

He had been pushed into the dirt, his books strewn across the grass outside the schoolyard, for the umpteenth time that afternoon after the last bell. As he groped about for his glasses among the soil, he heard a voice.

"What a douchebag."

Sitting in the dirt was an earthworm. An earthworm that had used a naughty word.

Max rubbed his eyes and squinted at the worm.

"That kid that pushed you. He's a jerk." He continued, rolling his eyes.

Max decided he probably had a concussion.

"How can you talk?" Max asked, as he found his glasses and examined the invertebrate closer.

"Unlike most worms, I've got eyes. That gives me a lot more to talk about." The worm responded matter-of-factually.

"What's your name?" He dared to ask. Did worms have names?

"Edd." The worm smiled.

"I'm Max."

Max didn't have a concussion. In fact, Max was making his first friend.

He took the worm home and hid him away from his mother, who was a terrible woman who protected her son from everything from bacteria to having an imagination.

Edd was fascinated by the books Max read, which was often how he preoccupied himself at home. Max taught his small friend how to read and they read every book in Max's room, eventually occupying the local library every chance they could. It became their sanctuary, where Max's overbearing mother couldn't hassle him and the bullies from school wouldn't find him.

They talked nonstop about the books they read, gushing over the characters or even bickering about the contents. They were inseparable and the happiest they could ever recall being, the boy and the worm and their books.

But Max got sick. Really sick.

And his mother found Edd. And, naturally, she blamed Max's illness on his time spent with the worm.

Max ran away to the library, fearful that his mother would surely squish Edd. At first, they resolved to simply live in hiding at the library forever. But they both knew Max would need to return home. They decided Edd would live in the library until Max got better, and Max promised to visit whenever he could.

Edd found his part of the agreement easy to maintain, but Max had a difficult time making trips to the library.

And he eventually stopped visiting altogether.

Although Edd was aware Max was able to visit less and less, it devastated him when it appeared Max would no longer come to the library. Was he too sick to come? Had his mother figured out about their rendezvous among the books? Had something terrible happened to Max?

Edd stopped reading. He stopped talking.

And he stayed this way for a long time.

It was during a summer afternoon when a young girl came to the children's section of the library. She labored over the pages of a book about a train, before appearing to give up entirely.

"That book's stupid." Edd said from the shelf he was perched on.

Not surprisingly, the talking worm scared the girl. But Edd quickly suggested a new book, one about a rabbit, that captured the girl's curiosity. They read the book together and, for the first time in months, the worm was happy.

Edd would visit with more and more children, acquiring quite the fan club of children who loved to read with him and talk about the books. They also found that the snarky invertebrate made the best suggestions when it came to literature.

But he can still be found waiting for Max, despite the time that has passed and the new friends he has made.

Edd has so many new books to show him.
