"They're still after me. I can feel it in my bones."

Being the all-rare few of the limited species, Antlephores have been pursued by poachers for decades. With their nimble feet and light bodies, most were able to evade their grasps. But some were not as lucky.

Young Phoru, not only an Antlephore, but also Glade-coated, was sought for his unique coat since the moment the humans found out he existed. In an attempt to distract the enemies from taking their child, his parents had sacrificed their lives, their last hope being for Phoru to escape safely and not fall into the hands of danger.

So he ran.

Phoru ran for hours. He ran from his parents' lifeless carcasses. He ran from the danger. He ran from his home. His pursuers were relentless. Gunshots echoed through the dense forest. When he thought that they had finally given up, he would hear would he thought to be the muffled sounds of padded footsteps treading slowly and cautiously toward him. It could well be just his imagination, but the angry curses that sounded after he bolted again would confirm his suspicions.

It began to rain. He needed to find shelter. But how could he stop with the humans still at his heel? Oh, how he missed the peaceful green pastures he once called home. How he wished he could be back and safe with his parents! But they were gone and his home was overrun by greedy poachers. He had to keep going.

Soon after, he came to a path. Paths meant humans and humans meant man-made shelters. But humans also meant danger. Following it with caution, a seemingly uninhabited cottage came into view. The lights were out and it was covered with overgrowth.

"I definitely saw it coming this way," said a a heavy gruff voice. They're near! He had to make a decision. Taking the risk, Phoru snuck into the dark house. It wasn't long before the footsteps drew nearer and soon passed. They were gone. He didn't have to run anymore. He was safe-

The lights flickered on.

"Oh my, what do we have here?" A pair of large hands cupped under his belly and lifted him up. Phoru trashed, whined and kicked, but his strength was no match for that of the beast's.

"Look how adorable you are! Alfred, come see this, it's a baby Glade Antlephore!" Phoru stopped struggling looked up. Staring down at him were two elderly humans. One of them had spikey-looking gray hair and the other had hers in a bun. "I'm Weiss, and this is my husband Alfred. What's your name? Are you lost? Where are your parents? By the way, you can call me Granny."

Granny's warm smile encouraged Phoru to speak. She didn't seem to be very dangerous. "I-I'm Phoru.. I'm not lost. My parents were.. killed by poachers. They were chasing m-me, that is, until I found this place and decided to hide here."

Eyes of awe turned into that of horror and sympathy. "Oh dear.. You must feel horrible. Let's get you cleaned up, and then we can talk more about that, okay? Don't worry, you can trust us, we don't support animal harm in any way."

Phoru was cleansed and fed, then wrapped in warm blankets. He hadn't felt this comfortable in a long time. Granny and Alfred took care of all his needs and showered him with the same amount of love his parents used to. They gave him all the freedom he wanted, but also taught him what was right and wrong. When they passed of old age, he was sent to the Adopt R Us, Subeta's main pet adoption center, where he was taken in by quiet teenager named Poppy, who was kind and gentle like his late mother. He couldn't ask for anything more. He was safe and satisfied. He was home.
