Long ago, when the world was flat and when monsters were all too real in the world; when the mythological Gods sired offspring with humans to defeat these monsters. This is where our story begins.
Calixta was apt named as she was one of the most beautiful woman to ever be born in Athens. Naturally, as was sought after by most young Athenian maidens, Calixta became one of the Goddess Athena's handmaidens; she stayed pure and whole, and dedicated her life to Athena. Every action she did, her first thought was for Athena; whether it would embarrass her mistress or make her look even better. She strove for excellence in every way, but was very humble about her position in life.
As was oft to happen in the time of Gods and Goddesses, the mortal Calixta suffered at the hands of another; In fact, it was a God that ruined her life so completely. The God Apollo lusted after Calixta, and Gods always took care of their needs. As Calixta rarely ever left Athena's temple for more than a few hours every week, Apollo not only ruined Calixta's life, but also insulted Athena by desecrating Her temple.
The very same night that Calixta was thoroughly ravaged by Apollo, Athena punished the young handmaiden. So that no man would ever be interested in her ever again, the Goddess of Justice turned the beautiful young woman into a severely scarred and deformed young man. Unfortunately, the vengeful Goddess 'overlooked' Apollo's naturally potent seed when She made Calixta into a male, and the poor dear was forced to give birth to a bouncing baby boy. A demigod.
It was not an easy birth, that's for sure. The Goddess Artemis, Apollo's older twin sister, was even forced to come down and help young Calixta birth his child. The Goddess took pity on the young man that incurred Athena's wrath. It was not until much later that Artemis realized that Apollo was the cause of Calixta's troubles. When She found out, She vowed to right this wrong. She would turn Calixta back into a woman.
But, once a handmaiden of Athena, always a handmaiden; Calixta would never go against his Goddess and embarrass her even further by seeking help from another God or Goddess. Especially the sister of the one that embarrassed The Wise One. Calixta declined Artemis' offer to change him back and instead decided to live his life as a male. Artemis understood; She instead decided to do something that would connect Calixta to Athena for all of his life. She turned Calixta into an Owl.
Artemis knew that, as a demigod, Calixta's son would be in danger of suffering as all demigods of history suffered. She would not have Her nephew be killed by a monster or another demigod. She would definitely not allow Her nephew to be killed by an immortal God in search of vengeance. So, Artemis gave Calixta one of Her prized hounds, an experienced hound that would defend Calixta and his demigod offspring until the day they died. It was a huge honor, one that Calixta accepted on behalf of his young child.
But Calixta's precious child was destined, just like all other demigods are destined, to go on a quest to destroy a monster or fulfill a prophecy. His quest? To return the soul of a downed demigod from the underworld. He took the hound he grew up with on his quest with him, and Calixta tagged along in order to keep his child safe--also, Calixta made up the third member of the quest party, a sacred number for such tasks.
The quest went smoothly, as smoothly as possible. The only hiccup came when they trio actually made it to the underworld and found the spirit of the demigod they were to rescue. The hiccup came in the form of a bargain on Hades' behalf. He would allow this soul go in exchange for the soul of another just as pure; naturally, Calixta's wayward child attempted to sacrifice himself, but if he had gone the quest would have failed. Instead, Calixta volunteered to stay behind, offering himself up in turn. Hades accepted. As so a trio entered, a trio exited the underworld.
The soul in question? A son of Poseidon that played a major role in preventing the Titans escaping their individual prisons. A son that Poseidon deeply loved. When the soul was escorted to Olympus by Calixta's child and the hound, Cubbin, Poseidon offered a boon to the demigod--he had convinced his brother, Zeus, to allow his wife, Hera to grant the demigod a single wish. The Godling wished that his father, currently trapped in the underworld with Hades, be made immortal. Hera agreed and retrieved Calixta's soul from Hades via Persephone and gave the victim of Athena immortality.
Eventually, Calixta's child ceased to be in all but the stars--Zeus' own gift of immortality for the demigod. Nobody knew why the king of Gods offered such kindness to the demigod. Perhaps guilt? Only Hera knows.
But, once the demigod died, Artemis allowed Calixta to keep the prized hound as a gift--Perhaps the Goddess was still trying to make up for Her brother causing Calixta so much pain and suffering. Calixta was extremely grateful to The Huntress, he had grown quite fond of the canine. He likes to believe the canine had grown very fond of him, as well.
Calixta decided to use his immortality for good after his brave son had granted him such a gift. He would protect those that could not protect themselves, and train them to defend themselves. He would form his own Hunt; much like Artemis. The Goddess definitely inspired him, he will admit. And as far as he knows, the Goddess approves of Calixta's mission in life.
