A character by
Bats have a belief that the Creator formed their very species from the night sky, blessing them with fur and wings as dark and as deep. This is a belief held sacred by bats, one they cradle in their heart with pride.

For Wilmer, this made his life difficult from the moment of his birth, when it was found that his fur was a brilliant white.

The colony Wilmer's parents resided in, which took up residence in an enormous maple tree, were immediately appalled by Wilmer's appearance. His father was particularly mortified and was convinced his mate had been disloyal. He abandoned them both.

Wilmer's mother, Luna, was given the option to abandon her child or leave the colony with him at once.

In the chaos of Wilmer's birth and the judgement placed so swiftly on his worth, Luna's love for him never wavered. She adored her only son and embraced their exile with bold resolve.

As Wilmer grew, he was aware that he was different from his mother and the other bats. When he hunted, they would ridicule him, calling him names and shaming his mother. He blamed himself for their solitary life.

One such evening in his youth, Luna found him at the bank of a stream. His milky fur was covered in mud, which he had rolled in clumsily. He was embarrassed when she had found him, filthy and dangerously vulnerable on the ground.

"I just want to be like the others. I wish I was part of the night sky, too." He explained sheepishly.

Luna groomed the dirt from his fur gently, smiling at him with indigo eyes.

"You are made of the night sky - the very best part, in fact. The stars. They just don't realize that." She explained.

Wilmer was always skeptical of his mother's words. Was he really made of stars? Could he really be something special?

In the summertime, when Wilmer was older and his mother's fur was peppered with silver, the Earth was hot and the air was dry.

The maple tree caught on fire at dusk.

The flames lapped at the branches, scorching the bark and vomiting plumes of smoke into the air - as well as the colony in hysteric flurries.

Wilmer and his mother awoke to the sound of the bats' cries, roused from their sleep. Luna, despite her age, took to the darkening sky and sped toward the maple tree. Wilmer met with her quickly, blocking her route to the colony.

"What are you doing? It's too dangerous!" He cried.

"Those are our people, Wilmer. We have to help." Luna insisted, pushing past her son.

Angry, Wilmer turned on his mother. "How can you say that after everything they've done to us?"

"We're no better than them if we don't help." Luna said quietly, before continuing her route to the colony.

Luna's words washed over Wilmer like the heat of the fire at the maple tree. He joined his mother and advanced towards the maple tree, guiding bats away from the flames and into the night sky. The soot burned his eyes and made his nose run, but he did not yield to its fury or the roar of its breath.

While bats use echolocation to navigate, the smoke and the fire of the tree had disoriented the colony. That is, until they saw Wilmer - etched white against the night sky and the fire. They followed Wilmer into the night and into the safety of an oak tree's boughs.

Surrounded by the colony that had rejected him, Wilmer was suddenly anxious. Their eyes were on him in stunned silence. They moved towards him slowly and he flinched as they drew closer.

To his and Luna's utter shock, they started to clean the soot from his fur. Soon, he was back to his strange and wonderfully white self - and they celebrated him at last.
