The air was crisp on the October day that my child took me into the car for the hundredth time, jumping into the back seat, clinging to me by a fabric wing and giggling with excitement as her mother clipped her safely into her booster seat. Her mother gently snatched me from her daughter's fingers, holding me by my torso and jerking me about in the air to make my wings 'flap', making squeaking sounds as she had me attack her child with kisses about the head, earning squeals and giggles from the little dark haired girl.
"M-Momma! Hehe, stop! Hist is good!" she squeaked and the mother smiled warmly, eyes filled with love as she kissed her daughter's head instead of me and handed me back, the little arms hugging me tight to the jacketed chest of my owner. "Hist is very good. Will he help you pick out a pumpkin today?" she asked as she adjusted the hood on her daughter's jacket, the little girl nodding happily. Pulling away, her mother shut the door and moved around to get into the vehicle, speaking with her husband in the passenger's seat, something over how to best get to a farm, though my attention was taken by my little girl as she began to mimic what her mother had done. She held my torso in her little digits, making little squeaks as she had my wings flop up and down rather messily.
The car rolled out of the driveway and off we went, the oranges, reds, and yellows of the season flashing by at the tops of mighty oaks and thin aspens. My little girl giggled, pressing me against the glass to make it seem as though I were flying alongside the car as it went along, making 'flying' sounds as the vehicle rumbled along the road. She adored this season, loved the cooling weather, loved the colors on the trees. Pumpkins though - Pumpkins she adored the most. She would eat any vegetable her parents asked her to eat for a reward of a slice of pumpkin pie or to nibble on roasted pumpkin seeds. Anything pumpkin flavored she would gobble up with the utmost joy. Anything with pumpkins on it - balloons, decorations, pillows...she wanted them.Though it wasn't just pumpkins she loved, she loved bats as well. Her father studied bats, at least that's what she told me. He helped them and talked to people about how they help the 'in-viiiii-run-mint'. She had a hard time with that word, but she still explained it as best as she was able. That was how I met my little girl, I had been a gift to her on her fifth birthday from her dad. "Histiotus" he called me, another large word for my owner, who soon just called me 'Hist', far easier for a child her age to pronounce. "Histiotus montanus" is my full name, which he said meant 'Small big-eared brown bat'. Personally, I didn't think my ears were that big, but it made my little girl giggle to have her father explain the species and the work he was doing. She could always listen to him talk, even when I got bored of his talk.
The car came to a stop, a squeal sounding from the five year old as I again found myself squishing against the glass of the door as she tried to see outside. I had a decent view, able to see a large red barn and kids running about everywhere, hurrying with parents and friends, kids younger than my child as well as older, some with pumpkins in their arms, others rushing out into a large field filled with the large orange gourds. With a click of the keys, the engine stopped and my girl was practically vibrating with excitement as she called for her mother to get her out, out, out!
With an amused look on her face, her mother did come around and open the car door - and I fell with a 'flop' onto the leaf-littered ground. Neither human seemed to notice as the mother got her little one out of the booster-seat and out of the car, my owner running with eager giggles towards the pumpkin patch...and leaving me there beside the car. I was startled; yes, I had been left before, but not on the ground outside like a food wrapper! Panic settled as the father followed, no one realizing that their daughter's favorite toy was being left behind. How would she pick out a pumpkin without my help!? Would she realize I wasn't with her? That I wasn't tucked into her pocket, that my string wasn't in her fingers, my wings flapping in the air?
I decided to wait. I had been left on the bed before...or even on the floor in her bedroom. I just had to be calm, I just had to wait. She would come back for me, I was her Hist, she had to come back.
The evening began to approach, the nip in the air a bit more noticeable now as the sun dipped down towards the horizon. My hope was dwindling away to nothing until I heard the car beep, headlights coming on and engine automatically starting. If I could've lifted my head from the dirt I would have - my humans were returning! My little girl was returning! She was being carried by her mother, tired, a large pumpkin (large compared to her) held in her arms as the car door opened and she was placed back into her booster seat. The pumpkin was gently taken away, set down under her dangling feet as the father carried two other pumpkins to the other side. They loaded up the vehicle and the panic returned.
"No! No, don't leave me! I'm here, I'm here!" I wanted to scream at them, though the car began to rumble and pull away. The rear tires nearly ran me over, which was almost as frightening as what was currently happening. I could only lay on the cold ground and watch as the car drove away, farther and farther from me...and I was left. Other vehicles drove away as well, people walking by, but no one noticing the little brown bat toy abandoned on the dirt parking lot.
The last vehicle left, the lamps of the pumpkin patch all that remained as the gates closed. The silence that fell was horrible, leaving me to my own thoughts. The fear clung to me like sticky jam from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
How could they forget me? How could they forget Histiotus on the ground? When his little girl found him not their in the morning, would she cry? Panic? Scream and kick until her parents gave her her Hist? The hopelessness of my situation began to sink in. We only went to the pumpkin patch once a year, the night before Halloween. We would go home, carve them, set them up outside and smile brightly at the intricate patterns carved within them. Watch a Halloween movie, her favorite being Hocus Pocus or Charlie Brown...and then go to bed, dreaming of the next night where she would dress up and go trick-or-treating.
I wanted to cry. The sky grew darker, the moon the only other light I had besides the lamps of the farm...and soft paw steps sounded. Oh no, nonono - not an animal!
"Go away!" I tried to shout and was surprised when the black furred animal actually did stop, tilting it's head, watching me with deep green eyes that had slits for pupils. A chirrup left the four legged beast as it took a few steps closer to sniff at me.
"No need to be rude. I can just leave you here on the ground if you wish."
It was - it was talking to me. This whiskered beast could understand me? Talk to me even? Could I talk? I hesitated as I listened to the paws step closer, "...I-I'm not a chew toy, I just w-want my little g-girl."
"Oh, did she forget you here? You poor thing," the feline rumbled a bit, nudging me with it's wet nose, making me squeak a bit. "I can take you home."
I had to process that for a moment before I managed to respond. "C-Could you really? You could take me to my little girl?"
The cat grinned, chuckling softly, moving and gently picking me up in sharp teeth that could easily tear my delicate fabric. That wasn't exactly the response I had wanted - in fact it wasn't much of a response at all! It was scary to be carried away like this...what if they came back tomorrow to come get me? Or...what if they hadn't even realized I was missing yet? I went quiet for the feline as it carried me towards the pumpkin patch, jumping through a hole in the fence with ease, my wings swaying under me as I tried to ignore the moisture of the creature's mouth around me. I wasn't exactly sure where it was taking me until I noticed a woman sitting down up ahead.
Hadn't the farm closed? All the cars had left, the pumpkin patch was dark save for the flickering, dying flames of carved pumpkins, so who was this woman? It was hard to see details in the dark (and from the mouth of the cat), though she glanced down to the animal and smiled.
"Medea? What is this? This does not belong to you."
The cat, Medea, as the woman called her, hopped up onto the stone wall with her presumed owner, setting me down a bit roughly on the cold rock as she meowed to the human. I was unable to see from where I was laid, though I didn't understand what might've been said before a chuckle sounded.
"Lost his little girl? You do have an odd sense of priorities. We have many things to do tonight Medea."
The cat meowed again and looked at me, putting a paw on me to make me squeak. "Tell me, does your girl have a name?" she asked and I huffed.
"O-Of course she has a name! Maria, h-her name is M-Maria Laveau!"
The woman smiled a little as the cat meowed at her once more. "Maria Laveau...a beautiful name for a child. I suppose if it's that important to you Medea, we can take the little bat back to his girl. It is on the way."
I was scooped up once more into the jaws of the cat, squeaking as the feline hopped up into the lap of the woman and...she began to lift up off the ground? What insanity was this?! This human was flying? She appeared to be on a wooden branch of sorts, a pole...a broom? And she was going to take me back to my girl? Why? The cat got comfortable, shifting from the woman's knee to the broom handle a bit as they continued up into the air...and then flew away from the pumpkin patch. The wind under my wings was amazing and the night was brisk, the clouds floating by overhead as the warmed colored leaves of the trees rushed by underneath us.
The ride ended far too quickly for my liking as the woman descended near a very familiar home...and her feet met the grass as the cat hopped up onto her shoulder while she dismounted from the broom. She approached the window in the backyard and I was shocked to watch them open as she moved her hand in the air. This was...this was my little girl's room! I was so confused but overjoyed as the cat hopped down onto the windowsill.
"Return him to his little girl Medea. Then we'll continue on - lots to do tonight," the woman mused softly and the cat nodded before jumping into the room and hurrying over to the bed. Maria was sleeping soundly, her dark hair in buns against her little head as the feline hopped up gingerly. Walking over, she gently placed me beside my little girl - the little girl I had been scared of never seeing again. I was filled with joy, barely able to think of the proper way to thank this cat.
"T-Thank you so much! I-I was so scared I w-would be lost forever..."
The cat grinned with white fangs, "You're welcome little bat. Make sure your little girl enjoys her Halloween tomorrow. She's a special little one, has a lot of potential."
I couldn't help but pause at that, confused. "Potential? Do you know Maria? Do you know her parents?"
Medea only smiled before hopping down from the bed as Maria shifted and her arm came around me just right that I could see the window. The cat hurried back to the woman, the human smiling as she looked in before shutting the window quietly. I watched as they flew off out of view of the window, feeling in awe of what had happened to me that night. How lucky I had been to been discovered by that cat, that her human had decided to help me.
For now, I could rest peacefully back in Maria's arms. I couldn't wait for the next day, to hear her excitement. She would probably be dressed up in her little witch costume as early as possible. I only hoped I would join her that night for trick-or-treating.
