But what now?
Her companions went their separate way and continued their journey, but Deya had had enough traveling for a while. She wanted to enjoy a calm life.
This was far from what she got.
Now everybody wanted to be on her good side. The group had been showered with gifts on their journey but those gifts paled in comparison to all the gifts Deya got now.
She already had more gold than anyone could spend in a lifetime and now a lot of weird trinkets were added to her hoard.
On her journey, Deya had become accustomed to receiving gifts and quickly learned that trying to decline them was in vain. This would only lead to the same insistence on the behalf of the giver that she accept the gift. Deya didn’t want anyone to feel hurt by her rejection, so she decided to accept everything, be it jeweled eggs or silver bananas.
On top of all this, people wanted to name their firstborn after her. To Deya, this didn’t make any sense, but nonetheless, she always thanked them by expressing what an honor it would be.
The king wanted to give her a giant castle on top of a mountain and she thanked him. She didn’t tell him she was terrified of heights.
She accepted every seemingly ridiculous gift until the queen came with her wish.
The queen wanted her to marry the Prince.
She had never even met
the Prince!
