There is a curious legend in the island nation of sur-Maar that concerns the castle that dominates the bluff overlooking the seaside. Now, the people of sur-Maar are one proud of their history- no nobility has graced its castle’s halls for over half a dozen centuries, but the walls are unhindered by ivy and the grounds flower each spring with the same delicate specie of rose that grew so many years ago.

The lore of the past, they regard with the same care. Ask any child, even one scarcely old enough to have lost her first tooth, and she will proudly tell you of sur-Maar’s rulers and rebellions, of the great men and women born on its shores.

However, it is not fact, but rather the opaque realm of mythology that we must look to now to find our subject, the bitter woman, or amarus, as she is called in the old Maar language. Amongst the Maar, she is a figure invoked when referring to a traitor. She provokes both revulsion and fascination- her deeds, horrific though they were, were innately human in motive...

Her story begins thus: the bitter woman lived and died in the years before the sun and moon. Bravery and loyalty were the gold she dealt in, for she was a royal guard.

As her mother had protected sur-Maar’s ruler, and her mother’s mother before that, the amarus grew up surrounded by the great stone towers of the palace courtyard. Hers was a childhood that wanted for nothing material.
