Once there was a tree, and the tree was happy.
She had lived a long life and had loved her boy.
but she was not quite finished giving.... no not quite yet.
The tree was no more than a stump, when a new boy came to play.
She was so excited, "Hello boy," she whispered softly, "I don't have much to give you other than a place to rest, I am no longer able to share my apples, or give my branches, but I am a very good stump."
The boy smiled, he wasn't quite a boy, but he was not yet as old as her boy.
He sat down and talked to the tree.
"Tree," the boy began, "You were a good friend to my father for many years, he told me how you gave him his first job, our home, and you were his favorite place to come and rest."
He paused, "Thank you tree."
The tree shuddered, both in love and gratitude to the boy.
"Boy, I am happy."
"I know tree," he smiled, "I know."

The boy and the tree sat for what seemed like years before he got up to leave. The sun had begun to set and the tree knew her time was near. The boy took one last glance back at her, "Why Tree, What is this?" the boy asked.
The tree leaned towards her roots where two tiny leaves peeked through the earth, waiting to shine.
"Boy, it is my last gift to you," she whispered, more quietly than before, "it is a new tree."
"To love, to grow, to give, and to continue on my work." she sighed. The boy had a small tear in his eye, he knew this was the end of the Giving Tree.
"Tree, I will love it and cherish it always, and I will make sure it will always be happy."
And the boy meant it.
And the tree was happy.
