It's a sailor's life for me!

When I was a young boy of 5 my father was a captain on a cargo ship called the C.S. Leo. Because I was exposed to boats and sailing life at a young age I always imagined myself working on one of those ships when I got older. If I was really lucky I would be a captain just like my father. Of course my father was proud that I wanted to follow in his footsteps and my mother was less than satisfied because she always considered ships to be dangerous. The amount of time that I would have to be away from home was not something that she admired either.

When I pictured my fathers ship the C.S. Leo I always pictured her cutting and raging through the waves like a lion running across the African savanna after its prey. A big male lion with it's mane flowing in the wind as it ran. I never shared this fantasy with my father at the fear of feeling my imagination was silly. I always wanted to appear older and more mature in front of my father. I remember falling and scraping my knee when I was six years old. I got up and walked straight past my father in the driveway and scooted into the kitchen where my mother was waiting with a bandage and a tissue to dry my tears. She would always know when I was hurt because when I was outside her eyes never strayed far from the window where she could see me playing outside. My mother was a very caring, loving and patient woman. My father always seemed to look stern and very proper in his movements. I always felt it was because he was a captain and that's how a captain was supposed to be.

The older I got the closer I felt to achieving my dream of becoming a captain on a ship. All through grade school I would focus on things that would lead me closer to being a captain. I was really good at math and science and I took a navigation course in my ninth year of schooling. The navigation course thought me how to use a compass and follow a map. My other subjects were a bit lax. English was never my strong area but I think I let it suffer to keep my other grades up. When I finally graduated high school I had taken all of the science courses and math courses that I could. I succeeded in them with honors and had the marks I needed to be accepted into the Marine Institute where I would learn to be a ships captain.

Little did I know that when I went to the Marine Institute to do my secondary education I was far from being a ships captain. I did numerous courses in chemistry, navigation, cloud charting, math and others that were needed to complete my degree. Even after completing all of these courses and the first aid courses required to be on a ship I was still not a ships captain. I became eligible for a ship to take me on. I started at the very bottom and was able to work on becoming a captain if I so desired it.

It is what I wanted so I tried to get there. I started as someone on bridge watch. My job consisted of rounds which I walked on the boat to make sure no foreign boats or people were boarding or coming near our ship. I worked hard at my job and was thankful that my years on bridge watch were never stressful and nothing or nobody ever tried to board the ship on my watch. I decided to take the next step in my career after two years of my bridge watch job. I did the courses and the paper work to make myself eligible for the next step in my journey. I continued this pattern and managed to work my way up to first mate. The next step in my journey would be that of the ships captain. As first mate I was in charge of a lot of paper work and managing some areas of the ship. I was also the first hand so if the captain needed something I was there to assist.

I was in the middle of working on some of the paper work for the captain position. I would need to focus and concentrated hard to be able to do the course work and the paper work for the job. I have never been more swamped in my life. We finally docked in a port and I decided to contact my family while I had a few minutes for myself. I called and was dismayed to find that my mother had become ill while I was out on the seas. My father said if you want to see her you had better come home now. My heart sank. I scrambled to find the captain and clear my leave with him to go home to be with my mother. I booked a red eye flight on the next plane leaving and dropped everything to be with my mother. I landed and took a taxi from the airport straight to the hospital. She must have been waiting for me because I was only there long enough to kiss her on the cheek and hold her hand before she passed away. I just sat and stared at her for what felt like an eternity. Waiting for her to open her eyes again and speak to her, hear her voice speak back to me. My father was a mess.

A couple of days passed and while we were making the arrangements for her funeral my father sat me down. He said that mom's greatest joy in life was me. He said that she lived to see the smile on my face and that although she never liked the idea of me working on a boat; she wanted me to be happy. I vowed then to pursue my dream of becoming a captain. My father mellowed with age. He was not the stern, rigid man he once was. After the funeral as I was getting ready to board the plane back to where the boat was docked my father wished me luck and told me that I would make a great captain. I gave him a hug and boarded the plane.

When I returned to the boat my ship mates and the captain all gave their condolences for the passing of my mother. I thanked them and began back to work on my title as captain. I worked hard for months and finally got all of the paper work finished and the courses completed. When it went through I would be a ship captain just like my father before me. I was overjoyed that I was ready to take that next step.

My schedule was month on, month off so I would work for a month and then visit home for a month before going back to work again. The pay was great and I loved my hours. Each time I went home I could see little changes in my father and as the years went by I felt that it was getting too much for him to live alone. He never remarried and I felt it was time he looked for a new companion. I urged him to go out and mingle and finally he did meet someone who he enjoyed. Her company was very nice and she had lost a husband so she knew how my father felt. Each time I came home I spent time with my old buddies from high school who were still around. We would have a few drinks and talk about old times. They would always bring up my nickname Buoy. My best friend Adrian started it in grade school. Because I always wanted to be a sailor on the water they would tease me and say the only way I would be on the water is as a buoy. One of my oldest friends was Jenna. Let me tell you time has been so good to her. She had flowing wavy dark brown hair and the most beautiful green eyes I had ever seen. I started spending more and more time with her each turn around that I had home. We grew very close and after two years of dating I asked her to be mine and she said yes!

Life was good. I was the captain of a ship, I had a beautiful fiance, my father was happy and I knew that mom was smiling down on me from heaven. I have achieved everything that I set out to do in life. I felt complete. I was scyping with Jenna one night. She looked a little sick to me but I didn't say anything. We scyped for an hour and she didn't mention that she was feeling ill. The next time we scyped she looked the same so I asked her was she sick. She put a little smile on her face and said "yes, I am" So I said "Is it the Flu?." So she looked deep in my eyes and I knew. I teared up and so did she. All I could say is I can't wait to get home!

I would help Jenna as much as I could for the months of her pregnancy that I was home. When I was gone her mother Phoebe helped her out doing the cooking and cleaning. She was getting so big! I couldn't wait to meet our bundle. On one of her doctors visits I was home for she had an ultrasound so that I could hear the baby's heartbeat and see it's tiny outline. It was so beautiful to see and hear. I went back to work and the next time I would come home I would have a son or daughter! I couldn't get the thought out of my head. I yearned for the month to be up so that I could go home.

I got home three days before the due date. I was with Jenna every second just in case her water broke. I rubbed her back and feet, did everything I could to make her comfortable. Then one night after dinner she came into the living room holding her belly and stated my water broke while I was walking down the stairs. I got her in the car and drove her to the hospital. At 3:45am my daughter Alexis was born. At 3:53am My son Eli emerged. Twins, we have twins! Turns out the ultrasound was only showing little Alexis and Eli was tucked snugly behind her at the time. Jenna was wiped out but so proud of her babies and so happy. I too was happy and our new family was beyond what we both could have ever imagined.
