Cheetah/Secretary bird Gryphon. Grew up in African, in a small, poor village plagued by warlords. At the tender age of 10, he was taken captive by one of the generals in an attempt to hold him hostage in return for food and supplies. Unfortunately for the village, lacking resources but full of villagers young and old, they were unable and unwilling to meet the demands. The price of one child, whom would likely starve to death come the hot summer months anyway, was not worth the rations the General demanded.

And so Ransom learned from an early age the idea of taking goods from someone in order to demand payment. However, his lesson wouldn't stop there. Due to the fact his village did not want him back, the outlaws decided to keep the young gryphon and put him to work, instead. They'd already wasted resources on abducting him in the first place. He acted mostly as a thief - his adolescent, slender build making for quick getaways. It was in this setting that Ransom would thrive, learning the give-and-take of things. He figured which personality types were easiest to fool with a quick tongue, and which responded better to threats and intimidation.

This led him to quickly become the 'mastermind' of the group - however the group never realized this. Ransom caught on quickly that if he were to ever outlive his usefulness, he'd most likely be killed.. however, seeing as most of his skills were intellectual and the company he carried was.. well, NOT, he feared that the day would soon come where his life would really be at stake. So the first change he got, he led himself into danger and willingly became the hostage to another group that were selling men into the overseas work-force. He was once again up for ransom, but he knew his group would be unwilling to pay. Why give up their valuable resources when they could just as easily steal a few more village boys to train up? So when his time ran out and a deal wasn't struck, he was shipped off to America to an underground work force.

The drug trade wasn't so bad. While Ransom never took up any habits of his own, he fit right in with the running of things. He was athletically build and fast - not to mention his wings made for easy exits. A "delivery boy" of sorts, he gained his freedom fast, working diligently and without question. Trust was built easily with this group.. though why not? If you ran to the police you'd be in trouble not only for dealing drugs, but for being an illegal immigrant. They had you trapped unless you had another place to stay and a way to gain citizenship, which no one did.

But Ransom new better. Ransom knew that everyone in life had something they held near and dear to them.. that they'd be willing to give the world for if you played your cards right. He'd seen it many times before - failed attempts at collecting hostages.. failed attempts at collecting ransoms. He knew the stakes had to be high and you had to ask for something affordable.

And that's where he started.. gaining the trust of those around him before taking something precious from one of his "coworkers". It was as easy as stealing a stash.. a shipment of drugs that was supposed to get delivered one night. With the package mysteriously disappearing, not only would his coworker be in hot water, but so would his company. Their buyers pay well for their items, and to have their shipments vanish would put everyone on edge. Without anyone aware that it was he who was pulling the strings, the gryphon ransomed the items back to his own business, collecting the money for himself while also relinquishing the illegal items from his possession. It was this first monetary gain that got him out of the employment of others and onto his own two feet.

While still technically an illegal immigrant, Ransom began to figure out that targeting those who were beneath the law made it so that he could make money without having to fear deportation. The outlaws he targeted were certainly not going to run to the police for help. However, he did have to choose his targets carefully. Some would not play into his game, and he did not want to stake his life by choosing the wrong target. But the game was simple - steal an invaluable item, and then ransom it back. Then collect the money and move on to the next victim.

As his self-started business grew, Ransom started offering services to the underground public. Need some quick cash, or want to make a point? Pay him a certain percent of what you're looking to make and he'll steal the item for you. Not only that, but he'll handle the ransom as well. The victim will never be able to link the crime back to you, because his third-party will block all lines of communication. To the same effect he began offering assistance to those who have had items stolen. If someone other than his company was trying to ransom an item back, he'd hunt them down and retrieve the item for you.. for a price.

In the end, Ransom has his own little monopoly going.. his own little niche filled thanks to an unfortunate childhood happening. And of course, he's proud of the name he gained - "Ransom". The name he first earned all those years ago when he was a boy of 10, stolen by a group of thuggish men who did not care to know his real name, and only spoke of him as "the ransom" so as not to grow attached or think of him as human. And then again, when he opened his "business", taking on the name of "Mr. Ransom".. because that was the name of the game.
