Liam and his brother Oliver were not born in the land beyond the wall; the brothers were raised on a compound-like religious community in upstate New York. The boys' father, controlling and abusive, more than a little mentally unstable, would often be very emotionally and physically rough on the boys over his disappointment that fulfilling his "lot in life to procreate" hadn't made him feel any closer to God. Liam, four years older than his baby brother, got the brunt of the abuse. Often, throughout his youth and into his teenage years, he was beaten bloody, choked out, or left tied up in the basement of the family's home. It was a punishment he accepted without question, to keep his father's hands away from his brother. And his system worked well; until the day his father snapped completely.
On a cold night in November, his father made a move to eliminate his family.
Though he attempted to strangle Liam with a rope, the boy was younger than he was. Stronger. Fighting for his life, he managed to get his hands on the shovel his father intended to bury them with and swung.
This man, once upon a time he'd seemed so big. Like some ominous monolith or a cluster of dark clouds on the horizon. So full of bad things, so inescapable... Looking at him now, clutching the rough hewn shovel to my chest, even shaking like I was, he seemed so small, now, lying still on the stone with the pool of blood spreading. My neck was on fire. So small... Now.
That night, Liam told his brother that they would have new names from here on, and took him and ran. He refused to abandon his brother and go to jail for that man. He had taken enough from the both of them.
Though learning how to live on their own was hard, Liam did his best to raise his brother with good values, even on the streets. He, himself, finally enrolled in school and went on to college to become a teacher. Nuturing a deep love for children, Liam wanted to place himself as something of a role model; having none of his own, his kind, thoughtful nature lead this English teacher to become a surrogate father to any child in need that passed through his classroom, though the wide, dark scar around the soft spoken man's throat, such a contrast to his neatly kept black hair and well-cared for dress-casual clothes, is the subject of many rumors. He makes a point to take the time to stop for each child, to take their hand and help them keep up. And, more than once, his staunch will has lead him to be barrier that helped a child escape from an abusive home.
