Sora closed her eyes and smiled as she felt the warm, golden sunlight fall upon her face. The wind tossed her short silvery hair and caused the myriad of colors in it to shimmer like a rainbow.
She sighed wistfully, breathing in the crisp air above the clouds as she stood on the top deck of her airship. She and her crew had just finished dropping off cargo from one of the most difficult jobs of her career and she felt grateful that they still had their lives and now had the money to go anywhere they liked.

She remembered the way she'd met each of them, but none of it would have been possible if she and Rai, her first mate, had not purchased this ship...

21 year old Sora Teishoku wandered through the vendor and merchant filled streets of Aretec, gazing absentmindedly at the wares for sale. An interesting gadget here, a "new" mode of transportation there, hundreds of useless trinkets aimed at tourists... But then she saw it. The most wondrous airship in the galaxies! The lovely thing looked like trash at first sight, but the more she gaped and stared, the more beautiful it became. Even through the dust and rust and gunk covering the thing, in addition to the torn wings and a bent mast, she loved how the top deck made such a gorgeous curve with the inner deck and she loved the three enormous bay windows in the front. And though the engines were small, they looked very strong. Sora wondered why such a beautiful ship would be for sale, but then she saw the note at the bottom of the relatively cheap price tag.
"Beyond repair. Selling for pure aesthetics."
Sora sighed at first, thinking that an airship was once again out of her reach.
Then she looked around the old ship and noticed a mechanic working on the engine.
"Hello? May I ask what you are doing?"
The mechanic jumped and smacked his head on part of the engine that had been above him.
"Ouch ouch ouch," he muttered. Then the young man looked at Sora, his mechanical eye whirring quietly as it focused on her. "If you must know, I'm trying to fix this piece of junk since no one will buy it broken."
Sora smiled.
"Wonderful! Will you continue to fix it if someone does buy the ship?" she wondered.
The young man gave her a quizzical look. "As long as they hire me, sure. Better than doing all this for free."
She made a face to indicate she was thinking and asked "Do you think you can actually fix it? The sign said it was beyond repair."
The mechanic laughed. "They only say that because they couldn't find anyone who knew how to fix an old model like this. I, on the other hand, find this to be within my knowledge, although it isn't easy." He scowled at the engine. "Models this old tend to be very picky with how everything is done."
Sora gave the young man a brilliant smile. "Thank you for your time, you've been very helpful. I'll be right back." And she left the ship to find her friend.

"Rai, I need your opinion."
"Mmmrgh, huh?" A familiar voice woke the sleeping red-head from his comfortable nap. "What do you want Sora?"
"I found a ship."
Raize Hikaon jumped out of his cot. "You did?! How much!"
Sora grinned. "Well within our price range. There's a catch though."
He rolled his eyes at his friend. "There's always a catch. What is it this time?"
The young soon-to-be-captain shuffled uncomfortably. "It's broken and the owner thinks it's beyond repair."
Her friend groaned and put his head in his hands. "It's always gotta be the most difficult path with you."
"No, wait! Before you despair, like usual, I have a solution."
Always the skeptic, Raize gave her a disbelieving look. "Well, let's hear it."
She looked proud of herself and ignored his pessimism as she told him, "I found a mechanic who says he knows how to fix it and he's willing to be hired to do so."
He groaned again. "And how will we pay for that?"
"I figured we'd find a way when we come to it."
Raize sighed but agreed with Sora's plan.
The young woman smiled widely, grabbed her friend's wrist, and walked out the door.

The two friends walked purposefully to the owner of the broken but beautiful ship who was sitting in a lawn chair next to his sign.
"I'd like to buy this ship," Sora demanded.
"It don't work," the man muttered.
Sora glanced at the ragged looking man. "That's fine. I"m not buying it because it works."
The man eyed the two of them. "Ya seem awf'ly young for c'llectors."
"People say that all the time," Raize piped in.
Sora rolled her eyes. "Look, we have the money. Do you want it or not? We can find another seller somewhere, I'm sure."
The man got a greedy look. "No, no, I'll sell."
"Alright, here's the money. Feel free to count it; it's all there."
The man didn't bother, just picked up his chair and high-tailed it with the pouch of money.
Raize frowned at the man's speedy escape. "Some how, I think he just got this from the junk yard."
Sora huffed at him. "Does it matter? It's ours now, and we can fix it!"
"We?"
The young woman just turned and walked into the ship. Raize followed, and soon they arrived at the engine room where the mechanic was still fixing the engine.
"Ah-hem!" Sora coughed pointedly.
The mechanic looked up. "Oh it's you again. What do you want?"
"I am Sora, the new owner and captain of this ship and I would like to hire you to fix it."
He raised his eyebrows. "Alright, we can discuss payment in a minute. Who's your friend?"
"This is Raize, my first mate. Raize, this is-- Sorry, I didn't catch your name last time."
"I'm Naku. Pleasure to meet you," he shook Raize"s outstretched hand. "It's always nice to meet new employers."

A few months later, the airship was able to run. Sora, Raize, and Naku all stood in the cockpit room as the ship turned on and stayed on for the first time.
"Naku you did it! I'm so excited!" Sora exclaimed.
"Yes, well, we will see how long it lasts," Raize said.
Sora frowned at him. "Always the pessimist."
Naku frowned at him too. "I take offense to that. But since you're paying me, I guess I don't care enough to punch you," he added.
Raize grinned. "Thanks for the sentiment, I just meant that it's old."
Then Sora stared at Naku thoughtfully.
He looked back at her. "What?"
She smiled. "Could I possibly entice you to stay on board as part of my crew? There is pay included, of course."
Naku stood and thought about it briefly. "Sure. There's no challenge in staying here and fixing other ships anyway. This one was the first that really made me work to fix it."
"Great!" Raize said. "We couldn't go anywhere without a mechanic."
Sora went silent again, and both the young men looked at her.
"What are you thinking about?" Raize asked.
"This ship needs a name," she stated.
The two of them immediately started throwing names into the air, but Sora turned each one down.
"No, I have the perfect one," she said.
They fell silent as she put a hand on the dashboard.
"Airship, I dub thee Swift."

Soon, the three had packed their stuff onto the airship and it was up and running. Raize piloted the ship out of the city. In a short time, they were circling the city without a destination.
"Where to, Captain Sora?" Raize asked his long-time friend.
"Wherever the skies may take us."
