Since childhood, Alexander and Hephaestion were best friends. Their tutor, philosopher Aristotle said that they were "one soul abiding two bodies". The two fought side by side over the years, and compared themselves to the great heroes Achilles and Patroclus, whom were seen as lovers by some. Regardless if you believe Alexander and Hephaestion were lovers, the two were deeply bonded.
After an elaborate funeral for Hephaestion where certain rituals only meant for the king himself were performed, Alexander asked to have his late friend deified. The mourning king never stopped planning on more memorial services ever since, until his own death eight months later. It was a month away from his 33rd birthday.
Some believed that he had followed his late friend to the house of death. Maybe the two halves of one soul could finally be whole again.
