SetoK is an ancient monster from the culture of the Ferali island. The word SetoK means "bestial" in the Feralith language, and is believed by many to be a portmanteau of "Set" meaning "spark produced when a hard object strikes flint" or "Benevolent" and "Toket" meaning "monsoon." In the legends, SetoK is described as a black, wingless (until contact with outsiders, the idea of winged dragons was foreign to the island) dragon with a charcoal underbelly and deep purple eyes. He has powerful claws, sharp fangs and whip-like spined tail.
SetoK was believed to have originally been a Ferali child, named Set, born under the 9th day of the Sign; the Dragon. He was gruesomely deformed, and one arm was crippled. Despite it being forbidden, during a time of hardship, he was chosen as one of many child sacrifices to the Gods as an appeal for forgiveness. Although Set resisted, repeatedly begging to be left behind, and waving about his tooth necklace, he was taken along with the other children, to the altar deep within the island forest.
After many days, a single mauled child returned, claiming that a monster had attacked the party and killed the spiritualist, but had allowed her to escape. A new spiritualist was chosen, but she too was killed, long before she reached the altar. The children, however, were permitted escape. The village leader even ordered the construction of an altar in the village, so that spiritualists would not have to venture into the woods, but it burned to the ground long before construction was completed.
SetoK is believed to be the child Set, spared by the Gods because of his innocence. He became a beast, so that he could take revenge on all those who threatened the innocent. His tooth, which could not protect him in it's origional form, changed in order to protect him in a different one. Over time, however, he began to lose his humanity. At first, SetoK was thrilled to have visitors in the forest; guiding gatherers to the best fruit, and running alongside the hunters, sometimes even helping with the kill. In honor, or perhaps fear, of the beast, the Ferali abolished the practice of child sacrifice. Instead, people of all social statures traveled to the altar to leave out gifts of food, as well as toys and children's things to appease the creature. At night, SetoK could be heard bawling at the moon, lamenting his fate.
Soon however, this peace came to an end. At a certain point within the forest, the trees became gouged with deep claw marks, and the bloody half-eaten carcasses of animals appeared everywhere. SetoK had begun to mark his territory. A border seemed to have materialized, one that ran along the entire length of the forest. More and more often, villagers who strayed across were killed ruthlessly. SetoK seemed to care less and less about the innocence of those who entered his domain.
Eventually it became a custom never to stray across the line. Even those who did not believe in the stories of ancient monsters had no explanation for the dead bodies. The altar fell into disrepair, until became only a haven for bones. Even with the arrival of outsiders, the Ferali continue to instruct their children never to cross the line. They leave the Strangemen to their deaths.
Gently you set down your foot, carefully ensuring that it sinks deep into the soil before lifting another. Soundlessly you creep through the silent forest, your fingers firmly wrapped around your weapon. There is almost nothing to illuminate your path, and your eyes hungrily rake the darkness, drinking in the faint luminescence of the crescent moon above and searching for nonexistent starlight. All around you can see skeletal, black trees, their fingers stretching towards the inky sky, only to scrape uselessly at the air. At least their canopy provides shelter from prying eyes, not that you can think of anything that could attack you from above
Still, this has been easier than you thought. Sure, the altar gave you a jolt, but otherwise, everything's been fine. Still, you push the image from your mind, the crumbling, gray stone covered in spiderweb cracks, the top crusted over with ancient, flaking blood. There had been bones, human bones, scattered around it, you recall, most splintered and covered with unidentifiable gnaw-marks. As if a giant dog had mistaken them for his chew bones. Shaking your head, you finally force the memory away, and continue through the dark forest.
Something rustles in the shadows, and you turn on the spot, but your eyes meet nothing. The foliage stirs slightly, probably just a breeze you think. Still, you grasp the weapon tighter, and clasp it protectively to your chest. Not that anything out here could really hurt you. You're not scared of fairy tales.
As you continue on, discreetly avoiding snapping any twigs as you make your way through the dense undergrowth, you hear something. You freeze. But there's nothing. Already the idea of the sound is slipping from your thoughts, as hard as you try to grasp at it, it fades. You no longer remember the nature of the noise that you are searching for. I'm being stupid. Just as you're about to continue, an image springs; unbidden, and fills your vision.
A child. His face covered in sweat and grime, and his expression twisted into one of indescribable shock and horror. His eyes are wide and staring, pointed in your direction, but taking in nothing. He rolls on the ground, wracked by frightful spasms. His lower body is strangely distorted and misshapen, as if he is not quite human, and the skin of one arm is melted into a disgusting mess. His mouth is open in a silent scream, as a beautiful purple-blue bruise blossoms on his uncovered chest, spreading quickly across the unmarred skin.
Heart pounding, you take a step back, your heavy foot crunching through the dry leaves, as you flail your arms in panic. For a moment you struggle against the vision, and then...... It disappears. As if it had never happened.
Drawing in a shaky breath, you decide to continue. Everything is fine, you tell yourself. It's simple, really. Just keep moving forward, fixing your eyes on the distant horizon. In truth, the forest is rather pretty at night, you decide. The moonlight spilling through the gaps between the leaves, the rustles in the undergrowth the whimpering....
The....whimpering? Now that you think about it, there is definitely something. The sound is barely audible; a meek and pitiful wail obviously coming from some poor, defenseless creature. It's voice is yearning for something to clutch, for safety and security. Whatever it is appears to be both lonely, and slightly afraid. Just as you wonder what it could be, another noise penetrates the darkness; a low, rumbling growl. Something rustles in the distance. In the same direction as the whimpering came from. The infant is in danger!
Pointing your weapon ahead, you strike off in the same direction, guided by bewildered mewls, and the steady growl of a hunter.
Suddenly, your leg sinks into something soft with a squelch and you stumble. Glancing down in surprise, you realize that you have come across the carcass of a hoofed mammal. The animal's hide is in ribbons around it, and the bloody, exposed flesh has chunks torn out of it. It has been viciously decapitated; but the head is nowhere to be found. Deep claw marks have been gouged into all the surrounding tree trunks, and a feral animal scent mingles with those of blood and decay.
The whimpering lingers in the air. It is close now...
Sickened, you trudge onwards, hoping the whimperer will not meet the same fate. The growling becomes deeper and more threatening as you approach. Briefly you consider why it has not yet attacked. Perhaps it hears you...Maybe, it is waiting to see if you are a potential adversary. Or perhaps its quarry is less defenseless than you thought.
When you think this, the whimper begins to escalate in terror and pitch. It pierces the night, steadily building into a needling, ear splitting whine. It is desperate; the sound of a frightened infant groping for a maternal presence in the darkness, seeking to banish horrors that it does not fully understand. But nobody arrives to vanquish the terrors of the night. Heart pounding wildly, fighting every second to stop yourself from dropping your weapon to cover your ears with your hands, you charge through a gap between two massive trees, and enter the clearing that is the sound's point of origin.
The clearing is deserted. Rich brown, unchurned soil spans the gap between the entrance and the collection of trees and ferns on the other side. The strange whine has already disappeared, leaving you in the company of your erratic heartbeat. With wide eyes you scout the dark clearing, searching for the source of the sound. For a moment, you think you hear a whistling noise....But it a moment later you realize that you must have imagined it.
Thwack! Something strikes you across the ankle, like a whip. You turn on the spot, but nowhere near swiftly enough. Nothing greets your gaze. Moments later, it strikes again. Something lashes fiercely across your leg, and a heavy object slams into your shoulder, sending you careening backwards. Only sheer luck prevents you from toppling like a felled tree.
Now you see something, shifting in the shadows across from you. Your knees bend slightly, and you crane your neck, pupils twitching as they strain to make out the faint shape. With a rustling, the tip of a snout edges into the open; nostrils flaring. You stand absolutely still, allowing the creature to drink in your scent. It steps forward again, and you can make out the sleek form of its jaws, open the slightest crack in order to let a whimper escape into the air. Smiling to yourself, you edge forward. Now you can see something glowing, floating just above the powerful snout. A pair of gleaming, deep purple eyes stare innocently at you, widened in astonishment. The creature is in utter awe of you.
As you continue to gaze at eachother, you notice something. Those purple eyes are so deep, containing unending depths of emotion. They are more than just the eyes of some wild animal; they burn with complex understanding; and at their core you can see the telltale shine of intelligence. It continues to whimper, but now the sound has changed; it is less desperate, less urgent and more....like laughter. It is difficult to distinguish whether the laughter is pleased, frightened, or mocking. Perhaps it is all three. It raises a paw to its jaws, and you observe something rather odd. It is over-sized and patterned very strangely, as if it had once suffered a grievous injury. Your heart aches slightly.
Unafraid now, you step towards it, pointing your weapon forward. You support it from underneath, palms turned outwards in a non-threatening manner. You want to show the creature that it is your friend. At the sight of your weapon it flinches momentarily, then begins to creep foward. There is a wizzing noise, followed by a sharp THWACK!. You notice the tell-tale blur indicating that the creature's tail is moving. A twig, with a single leaf clinging to it, spirals from a tree like a helicopter. Its speed was most impressive.
Now, as it steps forward, you can admire the fluid rippling of its reptilian body as it stalks towards you. Beautiful horns curve backwards above the animals sleek head. A single word rises through your throat, glides across your tongue, and presses to your lips. Dragon. A long, black tail, studded with spines whips back and forth behind it. It's almost like cat's, right before it prepares to pounce.
When it is only a few feet away, the moonlight falls upon the dragon's head, and you notice, for the first time, that though it's mouth is closed, a single, pearly fang is visible, protruding from its lower jaw. The tip is stained dark red.
With a gasp, you step backwards, as it advances. The whimper is replaced with that oh-so-familiar low growl. You watch in horror as it crouches; tail swaying in earnest now. It pauses for a moment, sizing you up. Then, it leaps. Powerful talons claw at your weapon, snapping it to pieces, and forcing it easily from hands. As the muscular shape sails towards you, you find your eyes drawn to its penetrating gaze, scrabbling at comprehension. But, instead of cool pools of understanding, you find cold, jaded violet stones. All traces of humanity are gone.
Something warm splatters your chest and chin, but you cannot bring yourself to look down. All you manage to emit is a breathy, strangled shriek; as jaws close around your neck.
