| STORY |
Every man is born with wings. As you'd expect, they aren't visible to the human eye... at least, the living human eye. At the time of death, these wings finally serve their task: judgment. Those who have earned their passage into heaven find the path an easy one, painless and brief. For those who have weighed their souls with sin, the wings granted at birth will also be their demise, dragging them down into the depths of Hell. In this way are all men divided at death. But there are some who are not ready to die, who are frightened at the idea of moving on or cling too desperately to their old lives. These men, when they are finally shown their wings, do all in their power to tear them apart. It is, perhaps, a false hope that without wings, they can stay amongst the living. In a way, they are correct. It is a difficult, painful act, but one can destroy their own wings. They will never experience Heaven nor Hell, but they are not truly alive either. Their bodies may seem physical, remain tangible even, but they can not be who they once were. In cheating death they have been doomed to a new form of eternity. And while stronger than they were as humans, these creatures are still very much mortal.

When a wingless being dies, their soul is erased. In essence, they cease to exist entirely and their past, present, and future are all destroyed. There is no second chance at Heaven.

And above all else, they can see the wings of others. Watch as their loved ones or complete strangers are slowly dragged downwards as they lead their lives into chaos. It is a depressing existence that drags on and on without aging, and the only salvation offered is surviving long enough to reach the apocalypse itself and the final judgment of all beings. I would know; this is my fate.

But there is some small vestige of hope.

Early on, when the numbers of wingless ones were increasing at an alarming rate, we were given a choice. There was one small, difficult chance at redeeming ourselves and earning true death at last. Some call us Guardian Angels, but as we couldn't quite make it to Heaven I don't find it a terribly accurate name. Still, the basic premise is the same. We are to watch the still living of the Earth and try and ensure their passage to Heaven. It is our goal to keep others from following our own paths... or falling farther. When we see a being who has begun the process of damaging or weighing down their wings, we work to become an integral part of that individual's life. In order to save ourselves, we must help them find salvation.

If we succeed in this goal, we will be given the once impossible second chance at the world's end. It is no easy task, though; changing the destiny of another is an incredibly difficult task and there are those who do all in their power to interfere with our work. Demons, we call them, and demons they truly are.

Heaven is not the only force acting to influence humanity. And unlike my kind, they fight with no hesitation or fear.

Some days, I feel like the odds are stacked against us.

| HISTORY |
They had been arguing. Something petty, Rue was certain, but then retrospect was always 20/20. Perhaps, had he agreed to take the boy for some ice cream, they would not have taken that route home... wouldn't have passed through that intersection.

He'd always wanted a son. There'd been idealized visions, fantasies, of an unbreakable bond. Surely, there'd be love between mother and child, but it could not compare to what he'd hold. Father. Mentor. Guardian. Friend. Confidante. These were all appealing words to Ruenis, and when Quena had first given him the news, it seemed he would have his opportunity to fulfill them all.
