Birds chirped happily in the trees above. Grass, thick and long and vibrant green, carpeted the floor of the forest. Insects buzzed lazily back and forth, warmed in the sunlight filtering down from the skies above, looking for delicacies to munch on. A tiny rodent scurried out from underneath a nearby bush and sniffed before turning back to its burrow.
Legacian sighed. Today was a perfect. It was days like these that she could easily wander aimlessly for hours just taking in the sights and sounds of the forest, but today she had a mission. She was out looking for a rare plant, a lichen, that only grew in the most untouched parts of the forest. It could be found near rivers on moist patches of fallen logs. She was headed to a nearby creek to see if any more had grown since the last time she had needed it.

A bird swooped low over her head, singing joyously to the world about her newborn young waiting at home in the nest. She landed gently on a twig and began chittering to herself about the nutritional needs of baby birds. Legacian stopped and politely made conversation with the bird before asking if it had seen any of the lichen she wanted by the creek. The bird said yes indeed, it had grown back abundantly since the last time Legacian had been to the glade. Legacian made small talk for a few more minutes before continuing on her way.

At the stream, Legacian waded through the shallow water to a large log in the center that had piles of lichen growing on it. She plucked a few of its fragile flowers with her lips and put them in a bag that was slung over her shoulders like a saddle pack. She made sure to only harvest the mature plants because the immature ones could be toxic. After thanking the lichen for its contribution, she stood quietly and listened to the stream trickle past, washing any mud off of her cloven feet.

Eventually she turned and began making her way back home. Osgiliath was in need of the lichen to help with his old joints. He was a metal creature but Legacian felt that his spirit was what kept him alive more than anything. Scrub, his chihiro companion, dutifully oiled him every morning but there was only so much he could do. Legacian's skills as a healer had brought Osgiliath back far more quickly than Scrub was ever able to. She also used the lichen in a salve that Blixen used to ease the ache in his ruined shoulder. He never said thank you, but she could see the pain leave his eyes.
The forest continued on with its noises. Legacian left with no trace that she had been there, taking only what she needed and thanking it in return. She disappeared through the foliage, sure to return again some day soon to find her healing plants and take in the everlasting beauty of nature.
