Ancient library. One from the storybooks. Bookcases along the walls, reaching beyond sight, with ladders to reach books untouched for decades. Pathway, barely wide enough for two, marks the second level. Small, yet elegant spiral staircase, of ancient wood, which leads to the main reading area. A white flokati rug, imported from Greece is a stark contrast against the black Papasan chairs. Its modernness sticks out against the ancient feel of the rest of the library, but it's at the same time, comforting. Past the borders of the rug, there are only bookcases. Crammed against each other. Barely enough room to breathe. Books spill from the shelves. No organization. Ah, but there is a pathway. Through the towering bookcases, which threaten to unload their books upon the next unsuspecting passerby, a path can be found. It leads to another open area. This time, no rug, but a desk. Old and worn, it appeared to be for sorting books, but had not been used in quite a while. Though the desk would normally be quite impressive in design, it paled in comparison to the magnificent doors it stood beside. Made of dark oak, they had a whole story carved upon them. A beautiful princess. A handsome knight. A benevolent king. A fierce dragon. It would take hours to examine all the detail. The doors were truly art.

Pushing the door open ever so slightly, he slides into the sacred place. With a sigh, he leans back, and the door closes with a soft click. For so long had he longed to gain access to the glories that lay within these walls, but now...I don't know if it's worth it. Finally, he allows himself to break down. It's only been four days, but the pain makes it seem like centuries. Tears slide silently down his cheeks. How could he leave me like this? Why now?

You shouldn't be out on a night like this, pup. He can still hear the words. Nowhere to go, huh? Heck, come home with me. Lord knows I've got enough space for you. He still remembers the feeling of hope that warmed his heart that night. The childish smile he couldn't keep off his face. That night had been the most magical of all his life. And the days, months and years that followed had been wonderful. Though now...they were bittersweet.

He stood, alone. Head bowed. Dressed in black. Listening to the priest, reciting a generic eulogy he'd said a thousand times before. He watched the coffin, lowered into the ground, and it was all he could do to stop himself from throwing himself in after it. Cancer. The fear that word struck into the hearts of man. Why him? The music played. A sad song. It wasn't him. He wouldn't have wanted it. It was too soon and Kii wasn't ready to let go.

He moves towards the desk, gently running his fingertips over the surface. The thick layer of dust brings a sad smile to his face. Everything about this library reminds Kii of him. The arrangement. The books. The smell. He inhales deeply and ends up coughing from the dust. He'll have to fix that. The smell of aging books is too great a pleasure to have it clouded by dust. He moves forward, weaving through the towering bookcases. I'll have to sort these, he murmurs. Drifting, he stumbles across the reading area. A soft laugh. Crazy old man.

A book catches his attention. Bookmark carefully placed between pages sixteen and seventeen. Kii picks it up hesitantly. The last he ever read...

My Heart Is Broken
My heart is broken without you here
I think about you and wish you were still here
My love for you grows more and more each day
I ask myself why did you go so fast
You mean the world to be and I never forgot
The way you would laugh at everything you got
I never had a chance to say goodbye
But please don't worry I know that you are still with me
Every time I look outside I just wish you were by my side
I miss you so much my words can't even describe
I wish I could tell you one more time
That I love you
Only time is keeping me from saying hi
Cause with love there is no true goodbye

By Tim Sheehyi

A teardrop splashed on the page, and he shut the book quickly. Holding the book to his chest, he sunk down into the chair. Warmth spread through his body, washing away the pain he had felt previously. A message from beyond. I'll see you again. It's just a matter of time. Kii would always love him, more than anyone. But, until he saw him again... Kii pushed himself out of the chair and grinned at the challenge in front of him. I have books to sort.

Don't eat anything, or he'll flip, m'kay Soulbey? She stalks through the library, using her honed instincts to locate the young man. A smirk crosses her face as she spotts him, and within seconds had him pinned against the bookcase. Hello Quiche, she whispers in his ear, before letting him go.

Attempting to conceal the fact his heart was beating a mile a minute, Kii smiled back. Hey, Lulu. What brings you here? He'd met her a while ago. Before the funeral. She was his only friend. If one could consider a cold-blooded killer a friend. Her coming to him was unusual though. Normally he found her. Though that was getting harder and harder as of late. She..."recovered" valuable books for him, though she had yet to set the price for her service. Perhaps what he owed was the reason of her unexpected visit. Not that he wasn't happy to see her. He just wished he'd had a chance to make himself look...presentable.

I brought you a present. A friend. Y'know, since you don't have one. He winced slightly, but managed to counter with, What are you then? and instantly regretted it, as she moved closer. Her face was less than an inch from his. She's going to kill me. He almost didn't hear her This, as she placed a chaste kiss on his lips. Amazing that such a light sensation could cause so many feelings.

Resurfacing from his fantasies, he realized that she was already halfway down the stairs. Wait! She paused, but didn't turn. Don't you want what I owe you? In return, a laugh, likely at his ignorance.
I just collected part of it. I'll be back for the rest later. Then she turned to face him and flashed a smirk. Take care of Soulbey, won'tcha. And then she disappeared, amongst the too-tall bookcases. Leaving Kii dazed and surprisingly...happy.

He still loved him, but he was dead. Maybe Kii didn't have to be alone until they were reunited. Maybe, he could love again.
