The first dinosaur ever born at Jurassic Park was the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Some of the workers called her "Rexy". Perhaps it made them feel like she was less likely to rip them to shreds with her razor sharp teeth if they gave her an endearing name.

And when Rexy was born, someone was right there waiting for her with all the eagerness of a child, helping her peel away fragments of egg so she could see, smell, and feel the brand new world that awaited her. Her eyesight was poor, but she could smell better than anyone and anything. She imprinted on that first scent, that creature waiting for her, and never forgot it. It belonged to a kind yet naive man by the name of John Hammond.

He visited her often, always talking to her and making sure she was happy. Although he witnessed the births of all the dinosaurs that came after her, he favored Rexy. In turn, she had grown accustomed to his voice, and his scent was always something familiar when she was being moved around. Once she grew too big, however, they moved her into an enclosure and he didn't visit quite as much.

After a time, he stopped visiting entirely.

The mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex never met any of her own kind; it was deemed too dangerous to have more than one. That man was as close as she'd had to a parent, even after realizing that he was much lower on the food chain than she was. If it came down to it and she was hungry enough, he would be food. Perhaps that - in spite of his naivete - is why he didn't come to see her anymore. It was simply the law of nature. Besides, life was much better after she escaped her enclosure. Once she discovered that her fence no longer hurt her, it quickly became apparent that she could find prey elsewhere. There were humans outside her gate with shining sticks, and they were quite tasty. She was free to truly hunt, to let her instincts take over, and that was liberating. No more of those tiny furry things being fed to her and no harmful fences. She could find plenty of prey to fill her belly, and as she did so, the rest of the island learned to fear and respect her as the strongest of them all.

As she roamed the island where dinosaurs ruled the earth, she adapted and came to understand the natural order of things. Chief among them: she was not to be contained.

But humans had yet to learn that lesson. Before long, they invaded the island and were determined to corral the dinosaur kingdom into a zoo again. Rexy was - of course - one of the more difficult ones, and it took them quite some time to reel her in. When she awoke from her forced sleep, she found that she was in another cage. She fought and sniffed and tromped around in her new enclosure for a while, but they were far more careful this time. The walls were high and her teeth could not cut the gates. Out of reach, they threw more of those shining sticks and she knew that meant food... only it was more of those tiny furry things instead of the humans. Instead, the humans were above, watching and making lots of noise. It was annoying, but after a while, she got used to it. Food was food. It went on like that for many years, until Rexy had grown quite old for a Tyrannosaur. Even so, she never stopped waiting for an opportunity to get out. Nothing could quell her instincts; she wanted to be free.

One day, her opportunity finally came.

And on that day, chaos spread like a wildfire. With her powerful nose, Rexy could smell the death and fear, as well as something... new. Something that smelled like her fellow dinosaurs, yet... different, somehow. From in her paddock, those were the only things she could pick up on: the scents and sounds. Pteranodons and dimorphodons sometimes hurtled and screeched overhead, but none dared to swoop into her paddock. A shame, really. She'd been hoping for a meal that wasn't one of those tiny furry things. All the same, it made her restless. She paced through her enclosure for hours until a blaring noise caught her attention. It was a noise she knew well in her old age: the door to her enclosure was opening. This was it-- this was her opportunity. Through the shadow and the trees, Rexy thundered towards her escape, her nose catching wind of a human on the way.

Sure enough, there it was: standing there with a shining stick. Food. It started to run, as prey often does, and Rexy followed without hesitation, even as she realized that her prey was leading her to the source of all that chaos she had been smelling and hearing for hours.

In the distance... foreign roaring followed by the shrill sounds of fear from humans, growing ever closer as Rexy approached. She followed the light from the shining stick until she was met with a meager resistance from the remains of another dinosaur, toppled over and crushed under Rexy's immense strength. She announced her arrival with a thunderous roar, ready to meet this strange creature. And then there it was: the familiar-yet-different scent. The one that had been causing all of this chaos. Even with poor eyesight, she could make out the size and shape of this bringer of chaos... And it surprised her. It seemed so much like her. Maybe... one of her own kind? No... No, something felt wrong about it. Unsettling. Unnatural. In those few fleeting seconds, Rexy came to a conclusion: impostor. It wasn't family. It was an enemy. There was room for only one Rex on this island, and it wasn't this creature. Resolving to put the stranger in its place, Rexy roared out her challenge, the impostor answered, and they clashed like two titans. It was an arduous battle, and one that almost cost Rexy her life if not for the intervention of a bold raptor named Blue. Together, with a little help from an aquatic friend, they rid the island of the impostor who sought to uproot the natural order of things.

Rexy and Blue went their separates ways after that. After all, a tyrannosaur and a raptor could never hope to get along, could they? ...And yet, when their paths would occasionally cross, they would hunt prey together. It's true that Rexy had a distinct hatred of raptors after being attacked by them. Blue's bold rescue - however - overrode those instincts, paving the way for an exception and a great deal of respect for that particular raptor. It was out of that respect that Rexy allowed her to hunt in her territory. That was the highest honor the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex could bestow upon her.

In the end, Rexy didn't need others like her, especially if they were going to be like that impostor. Some might say that seemed like a lonely existence, but life is about adapting and learning to coexist with what you're given and those different than you. Perhaps someday the humans would finally figure that out and stop trying to contain a force that was beyond their control.

...But perhaps most of all, it was a source of pride to be the single biggest and fiercest predator around. Hammond had always praised her as the best of them all, and as far as she was concerned, he was right. The Tyrannosaur kingdom wasn't just a fraction of the park.

It was the entire island.
