Some people you can never please
You might as well just let them be
They mock everything not their own
From their imaginary throne

I still remember the day my eyes scanned the royal gates as they opened for me to enter. As my eyes glanced back and forth at the "fairytale" castle that I was going to live in. When my neck almost cracked back admiring the at least 300-foot-tall spiraling multicolored castle towers. I remember that my feet touched the perfectly paved and placed stone path and the royal golden laced red carpet. When my hands shook from the excitement of catering to someone's needs with love and pay in return, while living in a pristine palace. When my heart beat fast from excitement. It sounded too good to be true.

But I won't bow down,
even if the whole world thinks I'm crazy

They treated me nicely at first, giving me my pay weekly and serving me the finest foods that the king himself would eat... "Pandora, get me a plate of steak and scalloped potatoes," the King demanded. As quick as my feet could take me, I went and made the food as clean and neat as I could. I then hustled back to the King, bowed, and placed it in his hands. I remembered that he would smile if it was to his liking and frown if I did not make it well enough. Happily, he smiled. My heart fluttered with satisfaction, my goal of the day completed. I walked back to my quarters, and waited for my next order.

So hey hey, this song is for us
So put your hands in the air
If you're crazy like us, hey hey

Sometimes the orders, or demands, would be one after the other, hours after one another, or just one daily. But as time went on, they started paying me less and less, demanding more and more of me, every single minute, literally pushing me around, and starting to give me tiny scraps of food like a dog would eat. Some would think that this is abuse, and technically it was, but I still put up with it. I liked helping other people and serving them, but then again, not like this. How was this fair? I was a maid, not a slave, even if there was not a lot of difference between the two. And I was definitely not a mutt. I recall to the day that the King got on my last nerve... or, made me snap. I was fast asleep, but I awoke suddenly as the King pulled the covers off of my bed and yelled at me to wake up. I looked up, befuddled and half-asleep and then scanned my eyes over at the time.

Hey hey, that's freedom you hear
Coming right to your ear
That's the sound from our fuss, hey hey

Two o'clock in the morning? Was that right? He'd never woken me up this early before. "Pandora, get your lazy a** up and make me breakfast." The King demanded. I couldn't tell if this was a dream or not, but I ran out of the room quickly, as tears ran down my face. I did nothing in order to be treated this way. Nothing! But that was it. That was the thing that would make me snap. I ran down the flight of stairs, almost tripping because I was <[>asleep, into the kitchen, opening the fridge with a slam. This wasn't fair, this wasn't fair, this wasn't fair! I slammed the fridge back shut, grabbing bacon, bread and an apple. I got on my tiptoes to reach up to the cupboard and grabbed a slice of bread and coffee mix. There, in the back of the cupboard, was paprika.

Why try to be like someone else
When you can only be yourself?
No one can sing the song you do
Be true, be legendary you

I knew that the King was allergic to that. He'd mentioned so when I just started working there. Hmm... A devilish grin spread across my face. Was this the right revenge? Or should I just let karma do the work? I paused and thought for a minute, staring at the jar that could cost him his death. But then I slid up my sleeve and stared at the faint purplish-blue marks. Yeah, this was the right thing to do. A greedy, selfish b**tard deserved this. I took his favorite cup and mixed the coffee mix, water, and paprika in it, then stuck it in the microwave. I stirred it with a spoon and sat it down on the table as I made the toast, bacon, and cut up the apple. After I was done, I laid everything out on the table and rang the "food is done" bell around my neck. I watched as the fat, greedy king came around the corner, but then, he got in my personal space and screamed in my face, "THAT WASN'T FAST ENOUGH! YOU TOOK FIFTEEN MINUTES. I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME LIKE THAT TO WAIT! BE FASTER NEXT TIME." The king shouted, actually getting some spit on my cheeks. He sat down. I actually thought the poor wooden chair might break from all of the pressure. He looked over at me and frowned, "AND WIPE THAT DAMN GRIN OFF YOUR FACE!" I couldn't help it. There wouldn't be a next time. But he didn't know that...

So I won't sell out,
even if the whole world thinks I'm crazy

Until he started choking. I touched my finger to my lip and made a thinking expression stating, "Oh, does that coffee taste funny? It does...? Oops, I must of grabbed the wrong kind... my mistake." Hey, now don't call me sick, don't call me twisted. After being treated like that, it was right. And it felt right. On sooo many levels. He only choked for about five minutes. Then he collapsed. I checked his pulse. He was dead. I cleared up the table and then just left him there. You might say that I just should've left one day. You might say that I just should've found a new 'king or owner'. It's not that easy. He used to track everything I do. Literally. I kind of 'belonged' to him. It was so messed up. And believe me, I am sooo glad to be out of it. But I felt that he got what he deserves. Besides, if I had the best of luck and escaped without him tracking me down, he would just do the same thing to another maid. That would've been horrible. Afterwards, I got all my stuff from my room and put it into a bag. Then, I went back downstairs and took all of the food, stuffing it in my bag also. I went back down the stairs and cordially bowed to him, then turned my back, laughing loudly. I would be lucky if a guard didn't catch me, because of the noise. Luckily, I ran down the hall and escaped, but in a formal fashion...

Why kiss the feet of the people who kick you
When you can be anything that you want to

... as I slowly walked out the same gates that I was so eager to enter a year ago.
