Alana Dupont didn't always aspire to be the kings plaything, and in fact grew up seeing him fairly frequently as a child. Her father was a favored physician to the king, perhaps because he was known for using extremist healing methods. In any case, Alana grew up accustomed to getting, well, just about anything she wanted. Her mother had a hard time controlling her, even before birth; Alana liked to kick her mothers stomach and cause her as much discomfort as possible. As a child she ran around the castle and never showed due respect to anyone aside from the king, queen, and their one son three years her senior. Her mother was convinced she'd born a reckless child who would get nowhere in life, and those feelings are likely why Alana adored her father so much more.

Of course, Alana had a great education and was deemed "bright," though Alana suspected this was due in large part that no-one cared to try and offend her father. Alana, of course, could read and write, knew the proper "ladylike" way to sit and eat and all other boring aspects of life she didn't care for. All she really wanted was to run around outside and experience life in a way her parents disapproved of -- she didn't care for the suitors her parents set her up with and was more likely to be caught flirting with the servant boys than a gentleman.

When she was sixteen, she was caught in a rather compromising position, but not by her parents, or another servant or castle helper, no, but by the to-be king himself; the prince's startled and then smirking nineteen-year-old face never quite left her. With more clarity than she liked she could recall him pulling open a spare bedroom to find her romping around with the newest cook-in-training. (Who, she recalled, had very lovely eyes.) But there are few moments Alana can recall in her life that have ever truly made her embarrassed, and that was certainly in one of her top ten. What was more amusing to Alana was how the prince began treating her afterwards -- he seemed almost to purposely seek her company out.

Prior to the incident, Alana could count the times they'd talked on two hands, and suddenly it seemed like all she was doing was chatting with the prince. This wasn't lost on the king and queen, who, though they loved Alana, didn't approve of her unruly behavior, especially with their own son such a wild card. Alana's parents, on the other hand, were secretly thrilled, encouraging her to spend more time with the prince and remain among his good graces. Part of it was parental worry -- they wanted to ensure that she'd be okay and safe when they left her alone in the world and in other large part was the hope that maybe, just maybe, the prince might consider her as a to-be bride, despite her not being a princess of any sort. Alana, in all actuality, could care less about being a future queen or even becoming someone's wife, all she really knew was she wanted to do as she pleased, rules be damned.

Alana was terrible at making friends and even worse at keeping them; alas, her closest friends were her animals, namely a little vixen she nicknamed Tez, short for 'Tease,' because the little thing reminded her so much of her cunning self that she couldn't resist. She was, funny enough, a gift from the prince himself. Tez had been only a few weeks old when he'd handed her over to Alana, claiming, "She had the personality of someone I knew and I didn't think it appropriate to make her into a hat," and thus Tez was spared. The prince gave Alana a small space in the royal garden to roam, and Alana found her new pet much like a dog. Tez seemed to enjoy following Alana around the garden and palace, and Alana thought her the most adorable creature in the world.

The prince's gift to Alana was not lost in the eyes of those in the palace. The shock came from the fact that no one could recall the prince ever giving anyone a present, not even his closest friends or family members. This was lost on Alana, who only saw her prize, but she couldn't help but concede the vixen was in large part the reason she found herself in the prince's chambers more and more often, where she found they talked less and less but never seemed to grow too bored of each other. She was never jealous of the women that were paraded in front of him, or even the women he showed obvious interest in; perhaps because she knew he'd come back to her in the end regardless.

When he was settled on a bride a few years later, around twenty-two, Alana was a bit surprised to find herself pouting -- though reasoned this was because suddenly she'd no longer be getting any more lavish gifts from him. "You're stupid," the prince told her, "if I want to give you a ruby the size of my fist, I'll do it without the permission of any wife of mine." He settled her (slight) worries and all was well, till the bride-to-be suddenly died in a rather mysterious accident. Alana heard she'd fallen overboard at sea, or that her horse had thrown her off and stomped her, that she'd been poisoned by a jealous suitor. In any case, she found herself pleased and the prince didn't seem too distraught -- "There's always more," she heard him say to his mother one night.

And though everyone assumed he'd find another bride, the death of the king brought tragedy among the kingdom, and thoughts of a happy marriage were momentarily pushed aside. Alana found the chance almost like a sign from God -- how perfect, she thought, for the bride and king to die so close together, leaving her with a gap just big enough to place herself front-and-center for the to-be king. As grief-stricken as he was, Alana found the prince's want for her didn't seem to be lowered in the least, and this delighted her. He seemed to take a liking to her more and more, and they were content like this for a few years, till Alana found out the king had taken a liking to a few more women. She became pouty and rude, refusing to let the king touch her and tormented the newer women, and only was she placated by the king when he promised to keep her priority and solely bring her to events. The thought of being the only known woman in his life was certainly enough to brighten up her ever-dull life.

Perhaps her boredom with getting everything she desired led her to being the one to coax the king into an illegal business he'd only mildly been considering dabbling in earlier. It was easier than she thought, finding a supplier for the drug of choice, but the challenge was convincing the king to find people trust worthy enough to keep the illegal business a secret; after all, what would the people think if they knew their king was dealing drugs to other royal families? Alana took amusement in the situation, and helped him find two people she thought suitable -- first, there was Sebastian, an older, calmer man with more intelligence than Alana and the king combined, though Alana would never admit it. She found he came tied to a boy Sebastian called Ciel, who was no older than fourteen, no younger than twelve, and though she tried to dissuade him from keeping the boy around -- she didn't trust a kid his age with something so important -- but Sebastian said it was both of them or none at all. Alana knew that Sebastian had some kind of tie to the boy in a way she wasn't privy to, and though she tried to find the reasons, she couldn't, and had no choice but to drop it, despite her curiosity.

Alana found herself pulling most of the strings in the trade, exactly as she'd planned. Rarely did she miss a meeting with all of them, and found she enjoyed having the final say in the situation without actually having to deal with any of the issues, leaving them all to the king. When she wasn't preoccupied with her illegal festivities, she often found herself either in the kings bed or wandering the streets nearby at night, a carriage always following closely behind her. Although not (yet) a queen, Alana certainly knows if she plays the waiting game, inevitably what she wants will be hers.
