You would always see her on a cold winters night, staring down from the dark starry sky, watching as you made your way through the night. some find it eery knowing that she is up there looking down on the world she once belonged in, but if they knew her story like you did then they would understand. You heard about it when you were a young girl, it was one of those stories Gran would tell despite your parents protests.
"She's been up there for decades..." Gran would explain, beginning the story she had told countless times. Her hair was as white as the snow outside, and you would often twirl your fingers in it while she spoke. "You see young one, this is a very tragic story. It happened a long time ago, when my mother was 18. They knew each other and were good friends." She would look out the window every so often and take a moment to gaze at the falling snow. "Teresa was younger than my mother, she was 16 years old, and she was quite the romantic. She is a lot like you are dear, she would talk of being swept away by prince charming."
You would nod around this point and urge Gran to continue. "It was a very cold night, and Teresa was walking my mother home..." Gran's eyes would lock with yours to make sure you were listening closely. "Something came down from the sky! Something dark and evil came down and stopped in front of them, slowly it twisted and contorted itself into the shape of a man, a handsome man my mother told me. They were so frightened by this they couldn't move. All of a sudden though, all the fear washed away from Teresa, and she smiled at the man, who smiled back at her. It was as though she was under a spell. My mother, still terrified, shouted at the man to go back where he came from and leave them alone."
Gran SLUNG her hands high into the air "Then in an instant, the man grabbed them and threw them so hard into the sky that they got stuck! My mother screamed at the top of her lungs and gravity worked on her side and she fell safely back to the ground. When she looked up she saw Teresa, her best friend, just an outline of stars, being circled by a black comet. She heard faintly coming from Teresa 'Help.' and then laughter from the comet."
"The evil man." You would state with a sad tone in your voice. The story was horrifying, and fascinating. "I see her Gran, I see the stars of Teresa sometimes. Why isn't she always there?"
"Well, when I was a young girl I was walking home alone and I too saw the figure come from the sky, on a wintery night like this one. He smiled at me and I screamed, and a bright light followed behind him and dragged him back into the air. It was Teresa, she saved me from her fate. She comes during the winter because that is the only time the evil can capture you and take you into the sky."
Whether that marked the end of the story or not, you didn't know because you would run out the door and look up, and see Teresa, the stars of her, the guardian of the winter staring back down at you.
