Ducks tend to be rather proud waterfowl. They consider themselves blessed with an intelligence and insight unmatched by other creatures, but are entirely guilty of processing problems in the most tedious of ways.

She named the non-duck "Fredrick".
No one is sure how Fredrick came to Lucy. Many believe he actually hatched from an egg like Lucy's other children, but the science behind this theory was never explored due to the way ducks often think - which is never thorough.
Regardless of how Fredrick came to Lucy, he has become a permanent fixture in her family, believing without a shade of doubt he is a duck.
