I was well loved from the moment my human brought me home with him. It was an unconditional love on his behalf; I could do no wrong. If I chewed up something that was in the house, he didn't hit me or yell at me. If I kept him from doing work, he didn't shove me away or tell me to go lay down. And if I bit him just a little too hard during play he didn't smack me on the nose. In return, I loved and protected him as best I could. When his boyfriend smelled like alcohol, I kept him away from my human. When another dog barked at him I threw my weight around and barked right back. And when my human was sad I didn't leave his side.
His boyfriend never liked me. And he liked me even less when I finally bit him after he hit my human. He kicked me. He would have done more but my human grabbed my collar and drug me out of the house and locked me inside of his car. He got in after me and we drove away from his stumbling boyfriend's home.
I was scheduled to be put to sleep for biting. I know biting his bad, but he hurt my human. I was taken away and locked away with other dogs that were going to be killed. I was there for days; waiting, longing to be with my human again. And then I was with my human again. My precious owner swept in and saved me from the cage; the other dogs whined and barked, but I did not bark back. They just wanted to be saved too.
It seemed like right after I was saved from death that the whole world died. My human was scared, though he would never let anyone know it. But I knew. Everyday he had to kill to stay alive; humans, animals, dead humans. And I helped. Very little. I was never trained to do much but keep my human company. But I kept watch. I pointed him towards food if I smelled something good. And I protected him from nasty dead humans.
I fell asleep on watch one day while my human was resting. His screaming woke me up. He was being bitten by a dead human. I was so scared that I didn't move at first. But then I knocked the dead human off of my human. We killed the dead human and took shelter. My human was hurt, bad.
He wouldn't let me near him to clean his wound. He kept me away from him. He didn't want me near hm anymore. I let him get hurt and he didn't want me near him anymore. But I stayed around and kept watch, even though he wanted me gone. I saw when he tried to hurt himself. I whined at him and he stopped. Maybe he wasn't mad at me.
After awhile he let me get close to him again. He seemed to cheer up, no longer obsessing about the wound on his shoulder. He let me clean it when it bled black gunk and blood. It tasted bad and like dead things, but my human was alive. It stopped bleeding black gunk after a little while, and healed all together. My human became more confident after that. He was not afraid of the dead humans. So neither was I.
They could not hurt us. We could not be turned.
