Profile in progress!

The man rushed downstairs at the sound of his wife's shriek. He found her sitting in one of the kitchen chairs, one hand on her round belly.

"What happened?", he asked breathless.

"It's ok, it's just another...one of those, I was just surprised", she replied, pointing to the back entryway.

He took a look and saw the mangled body of a dead rabbit, skin and muscle almost gone with the bones gnawed on by some wild animal. He took the body outside and threw it into the edge of the woods.

They moved into the newly built home about seven months ago, some time after they were married and had saved enough money to buy the woodland to clear and make the farm. They started finding the bones and bodies first in the fields as they tilled the soil for new plots but didn't think anything of it, it had been woodland before that. It wasn't until new bones began appearing in the gardens and house that they started to wonder what was happening.

The man returned to the kitchen he put a kettle of water on the stove for tea and sat down next to his wife.

After a few moments of silence he said "Maybe we should go stay with your family for a few days, just to relax. I can hire some of the boys from down the street to care for the crops and feed the chickens while we're gone". He was worried about what the stress might do to the pregnancy and thought they could do with some perspective.

The woman sat silently until the kettle began to whistle. She got up and poured the hot water over the tea leaves. "That might be a good idea" she finally answered. "Just a couple of days though".

After they finished their tea they packed a couple night's worth of clothing and supplies, loaded it into their small wagon, and set out for her parents' home, only about an hour and a half journey from them.

They arrived shortly before dinner would be served and were a little surprised to see horses they didn't recognize tethered outside.

"Oh, I hope they don't have company, I wouldn't want to intrude..." the woman said, but as they pulled up her father who was outside cleaning his boots waved happily.

"Well, what are you two doing out here?" he said to his daughter as he walked up and helped her down out of the wagon.

"We just thought we might come and visit for a day or two since it's been so long, but it looks like you already have company..." she replied.

"Oh don't worry about that, it's just Oba and her son. We have them over for food sometimes since he already works so hard taking care of her.

Oba was the oldest person living in the area, or anywhere in the kingdom if you listened to some people. The woman was not at all surprised to see to see that she looked almost exactly the same as the last time she saw Oba when she was a young girl. Her thin white hair pulled into a tight bun didn't seem to have any effect on the creases so prominent on her face. Her shoulders hunched with age, she barely stood taller than her husbands waist, but there was a sharp glitter in her dark eyes that spoke to a still strong mind.

They all sat down at the table as the woman's parents brought the food to the table and chatted happily about the recent rains bringing strong crops, local gossip, and any other light topic that crossed their minds. As the night grew late and there was a lull in the conversation, the woman's father asked, "So how are things going with the new farm?".

The couple glanced at each other and were quiet for so long that the woman's mother prodded "Is something wrong?".

"It's probably nothing, it's just...some animal keeps leaving its kills everywhere. Even in the house. I don't know how it keeps getting in."

Oba had started to doze off at this point but snapped her eyes open and looked at the woman as she spoke. "Have you seen the animal? Heard it moving throughout the house?"

"No, the bones just appear randomly, sometimes right after I looked somewhere."

"Bones...it sounds like kizashi!"

"A a what?"

"Kizashi! The omen.", Oba leaned over the table looking intently at the couple, "bad omen to have when you're expecting a child too!"

The woman pulled away, placed a hand on her stomach and replied with a slightly shaky voice "Wha, what should we-"

"Oh come on, this is just old superstitions!", her husband jumped in while the rest of the dinner party tried to stay out of the conversation, "I'm sorry Oba, but I'm sure this is just some sort of local animal who's found a way to hide in our home".

"Hmph", she snorted back, "if you're willing to bet your child's life on that then go ahead and do nothing about kizashi."

"Shouldn't we look into it? Just to be safe?", the woman asked her husband with worry creasing her brow.

The man sighed, "What can we do anyway?"

"I know a bone reader", replied Oba, "I will ask her to come and do a reading at your home. Then we will know what the kizashi is trying to tell you."

The couple looked at each other for a moment and then the man seemed to give in and said a little sarcastically "Ok, at the very least we can rule out messages from the spirit world if we do it..."

"Good! Ok, we are going home now, I must write a letter to ask the bone reader to visit. I will tell you when she replies", Oba replied with a matter of fact look at her son who raised his eyebrows in amusement before getting up to prepare the horses for the ride home. After they left the woman began to help clear the table but her parents insisted she get some rest so her and her husband retired to the guest room. In the end they stayed three fairly relaxing days with her parents making a strong effort to give them a time of rest. Upon their return to their farm they found a letter from Oba saying that the bone reader had agreed to come and give them a reading, she would arrive in a week or so.
