JONAH GRIMES, art teacher with a head full of moths. Raised by an alcoholic father (he's now sworn off the stuff for good, lest he become like that man,) he quickly turned to a chosen family to escape him. In his twenties he had a suicidal streak that led him to crash cars, do drugs, engage in casual masochistic sex with people he didn't even like and slowly drink and smoke himself to death. After a few unsuccessful attempts to get clean, he finally cut himself off from his friends and moved away to start a new life. Fifteen years later he's got his new life - he teaches art to high school students in a dusty little city somewhere in the United States. A few run-ins with the supernatural has not shaken his skeptical views, and by all regards, he's doing well for himself. There's just this nagging feeling somewhere inside of him that he missed out on something good.
