The Alphan's Tracker
Handing Tauren over to Voorik was supposed to be the best moment of his life. Not the worst.
He paced his dingy room that stank of old sweat, his bare feet producing a spine-tingling creak every time he trod on the loose board under the grimy window. The glass was nearly black with twenty years of dirt and neglect.
Not even Voorik's generosity could keep Kethor out of debt for long.
His taste in women ran expensive.
Looks were irrelevant, as long as they treated him like he was the Alphan. He was a sucker for sweet pillow talk and liked his flattery thick enough to cut with a knife.
He particularly liked when they bragged up his tracking skills. He was the best Tracker in the world and he knew it.
That's why he'd been selected to hunt down the elusive Tauren Masterson. For the last decade of his life, this had been his all-consuming goal, the only thing that truly mattered.
He'd relished the challenge, even on those days he'd had a strong urge to put his fist through the nearest wall.
Tauren's capture after such a glorious hunt had been such a letdown. Too easy by far.
He'd used the woman, though she was oblivious to her role. Leah had been desperate to rekindle a love gone cold. She'd known those places in Tauren's heart that were dark even to Kethor. She'd made the connection no other person alive could have made. Finally, she had slipped into the trap so conveniently laid. He'd given the happy couple a month to settle in, to truly believe they had outwitted the Alphan for good.
People in love were so predictable.
Would she be in the crowd when his head rolled? Would she beg outright for the body or come as a thief in the night?
She was classy, despite her rough start in life. She would never surrender to Kethor's touch, though they were shaped from similar lumps of clay. He hated her for how she'd risen above her birth rank and bettered herself to the point of fame.
He hated her even more for how close she'd been to Tauren.
He didn't remember drawing his sword. When he came to his senses, the dining table was reduced to so much firewood and the beefy innkeeper was six inches away from his face, screaming about damages and calling for the Guard. Kethor wheezed a laugh and tapped the badge on his sleeve.
"I am the Guard, you bean-eating old goat."
He tossed his last few coins in the man's face and stalked into the street, his meager bag of possessions flung over one shoulder.
He had no destination in mind other than to avoid the square. He would not go to Voorik's little show, not when he'd been cast aside with only a lousy sack of silver to sustain him.
He'd go to the pleasure house where his life had begun...and would most likely end.
He'd return to the weed-strewn garden where a once-proud woman had broken his heart.
He'd even go to the crappy street corner where his mother had abandoned him.
He just would not, under any circumstances, go to the square.
He found himself at the edge of the square and cursed vigorously enough to delight a trio of children and earn dirty looks from their mothers.
He took in the scorched chopping block, the empty basket and the baffled look on the face of the man charged with seeing Tauren safely through the crowd. He listened to the gossip still going around like a wild fire. A woman dressed in green on a pale horse. The fury on Voorik's face when his blade struck only air. Tauren clinging to his love, his golden hair whipping in the wind as they successfully gained the gates of the city and made for the wilderness.
Kethor cracked his first real smile in months.
He really didn't care if Voorik or Tauren was the ultimate victor.
All that mattered was that his life would once again be interesting.
