Story outline:
Elaine is a demon hunter. Physically scarred by a menacing demon whose mere scratches are capable of inflicting permanent pain. The powerful monster avoided the decapitating sweep of her scythe, then quickly captured her.
Upon capturing her, he tortured her, cutting her body all over. Then, he continued to cut, on just one particular spot on her chest, forming an X over her heart. He shallowly sliced her chest, then did it again in the same spot. Then he did it again. And again, and again and again. Digging deeper, and more slowly, each time.
She was saved by fellow demon hunters, but were unable to kill the monster. Elaine will never heal from the her painful wounds...unless the demon is slain. The demon's power over pain only exists as he does.
She's not the only hunter to be scarred by the demon. One man who fought the demon and lost, mocked her for trying her hand at it, but she persisted. She sought and found the monster, only to experience a similar fate as the man. But her strength is different from his: her will is more powerful. Her biggest desire was to become stronger than those who had hurt her. The man was weak, he sulked and sank into his own self-pity, despite normally getting what he wanted. He's not one to persevere, certainly not on his own. Elaine's story is different. She strives and rises, and she will try again.
