I know that the gods will forgive me. All that I did was for their cause, by their will. I was the hand of the divine and every deed done through me was part of the Four's great plan - every dirty, rotten, messed-up second of it. They smile on me and I am in their keeping. When I die, maybe in some decades' time or maybe tomorrow, I will stand before the Stag in his Halls of Autumn and he will be pleased. Can't wait to have a word or two with the smug bastard.

I know that my country will forgive me. They already have. I am one of their greatest heroes, after all. Champion of the Empress. Liberator of New Albion. Hero of the Grand Rebellion. Defender of the common man. Lawmaker. Lawbreaker. Thief-catcher. Commissioner Victoria Clay of the London Metropolitan Police, the Four bless and keep her. She needs it. My Empress showers me with honours I don't deserve. Parliament makes a vote and erects a statue for me in Trafalgar Square, along with all the other Rebellion heroes. I went to the unveiling ceremony, of course - total pomp and ra-ra. There was even a brass band. The thing's as ugly as sin and my nose looks all wrong. The sculptor wasn't too pleased when I pointed that out.

My wife loves me dearly; she even loves my scars, the crick in my nose, the bruises on my knuckles. My nieces and nephews - my brother's children, not even in their teens - worship me. They've heard about me from their history lessons: the brave hero who helped overthrow the tyrants of old England and made New Albion what it is today. A warrior. A role model. Their dear Auntie Victoria, who smells like smoke and can make rocks dance. Who always has a peppermint - instead of a cigarette, she says - and looks forward to the winter holidays all year.

But I know that I will never forgive myself.
