the slime hero
My life was changed by a single sentence."Your brother went rogue."
At first, I denied it. In my eyes, it was impossible that Helium would willingly become an outlaw. See, my sibling had always been an upstanding citizen, one who would side with justice, no matter what.
But, as more and more people were talking about his descent into true supervillainy, I realized that there might have been a possibility that my brother's morals might have gone down the drain.
Now, go ahead and call me naive, but the first thing on my mind was to go and reach out to him - if only because I was worried for his well-being.
I mean, he might have turned to evil, but he's still my brother, right? There was no way he wouldn't listen to his little sibling!
"You don't understand! This whole world went mad; we can't trust anyone! I literally cannot do worse than our current leaders!"
To be frank, it was extremely confusing to hear such a strange discourse coming from him. I don't know what was the straw that broke the camel's back; what horrors got him to adopt this radical view of the world - but it did not happen overnight.
It was an accumulation of little frustrations that I attempted to soothe, to no avail.
No matter how heartfelt, how sincere my words were, nothing I said could sway him away from his positions. His words were erratic, vitriolic, dangerous.
The older sibling I've admired was now gone; his body hijacked by a villainous zealot, whose only desire was to bring The Powers That Be to their knees.
"Join me, Helix. Together, we can absolutely topple them!"
It was such an insane proposal that I couldn't do anything but turn my back on him for the first time.
Don't get me wrong; I hate The Powers That Be as much as he did - but paying evil upon evil wasn't the solution.
I had to find a way to stop my own brother from ravaging the world!
However, I was nothing but a powerless man; one who did not have access to his ressources, his relations. I was more than aware that it would be an uphill battle, one that I was to fight alone.
Or so I thought.
One day, Jane found me.
We quickly bonded, and so, I learned that her codename's "Quidam", that she's a wandering shapeshifting superhero and that our siblings were now brothers-in-arms in what she sees as an insane war against The Powers That Be.
When she learned about my plans to stop Helium's organization, Quidam offered to go and train me, so that I would be ready for confrontation.
"Oi, you're sure you don't have any fancy-tier powers! Sure would be nice if you were able to launch energy beams! Or set things on fire! Or command the weather! Really, anything?"
At this point, her questioning and nagging about my lack of powers was getting a little irritating.
I'm not proud to admit that she got under my skin, to the point that I threw the PB&J sandwich I was preparing in her direction.
Not like it was really an efficient way to attack her, since she nimbly dodged it.
Quidam giggled for a bit, looking at the splattered remains of her dinner, and her expression swiftly shifted from glee to terror.
"Oi, Helix? What did you put in my sandwich? Because it's getting away from me!"
I swiftly rushed and moved the remaining food with my shoe, only to see two small blobs slithering away.
The bigger one was magenta, the smaller one was brown, and they didn't look like any kind of animal I had ever seen. However, as I grabbed the smaller one, I immediately recognized its body texture.
It was peanut butter. Sentient peanut butter.
Quidam cornered and managed to capture the other blob; one that had the same consistance and smell as the strawberry jam I used for the sandwich.
"Well, would you look at that? You managed to give these little fellows life! That ain't the most common power, but surely we can use it for something more heroic than fine cuisine!"
Honestly, I wasn't sure what she was getting at; in my eyes, there was no way this type of power would be useful in a fight.
"No seriously! If you learn to control that skill, no matter how many minions your brother got, we'll always be able to outnumber him! We'll always have backups! That's so rad!
Since that fateful day, I've been working on my skills to create life out of unusual matter, training them to assist Quidam and I on the battlefield.
Sometimes, a happy family is composed of one guy, one gal and around 250 little sentient slimes who are just here to have a good time.
But, I can't deny it, I still worry a lot about Helium's well-being. I wonder how he's doing, and still hope that he'll come back to his senses on his own.
I still hope to avoid confrontation, but it looks more and more unlikely.
