MER, THE JEALOUS ONE
Mer was, once upon a time, a great golden dragon, a benevolent, gracious creature that protected a bustling trading town at the base of a mountain. In his first 1000 years, he was given the name 'Mer, The Protector' by the gods, and he was smiled upon by them. They were pleased by his good deeds.

But over time, Mer found his heart growing darker. The humans that worshiped him brought him many fine things, from prize sheep to gold to beautiful virgins. The greedy, hedonistic ways of humanity were too enticing for him to ignore.

He began demanding greater and greater things of the humans. Soon, one prized cattle was not enough to sate his appetite; he required a herd. A jeweled goblet was not enough to appease him; he demanded piles of gold to rest his haunches upon. One beautiful virgin was not enough to satisfy him; he required a harem of the finest men and women to use as he desired.

The townspeople grew afraid. Mer now rarely ventured from his cave. He ignored the dangers that threatened the community he once staunchly protected. He allowed famine to fall upon them, for warring kingdoms to descend upon them and ravage their homes. Mer did not care about what happened to those who once revered him; all he now cared about was pleasure.

The gods took notice of this. At first, they gave him a warning: if he did not change his ways, he would be punished. Mer, like a fool, laughed in the face of the gods. Punishment? What could they possible do to a great, magnificent dragon such as him? He was so full of himself that he ignored their warnings, and continued down his path of hedonism.

This was how Mer suffered the wrath of the gods who once championed him, and was cursed to join humanity, blind and powerless, to relearn the humility he once treasured.
