Once upon a time, there were two young girls named Anastasia and Loretta.
Anastasia was as beautiful and delicate as a porcelain doll. Her golden hair was always perfectly styled and she wore the finest dresses as her father ran a very successful trading company and lavished her with anything and everything she could possibly wish for.
Loretta was not as rich nor as pretty as Anastasia. Her dark hair was scruffy and unkempt, her skin covered in freckles and her clothes were often very plain and purchased from local thrift shops.
Now, you wouldn't imagine two children that are so different would ever become friends and, under different circumstances, they probably wouldn't be if not for one thing they both loved more than anything: carousels.
The girls met at an art fair, catching each other admiring the same painting of a colorful carousel horse covered in ribbons and surrounded by butterflies.
"Do you....like them too?" Loretta asked shyly.
"I do!" Anastasia replied.
"Have you ever ridden one?"
"Why, yes! I've been on many carousels! Let's see, there was the White Rose carousel in Adenshire, I simply adored the one on Valsia, oh, and the one in Riseloft has all the animals designed after different types of griffons-" She stopped short when she realized that Loretta was staring at her with eyes wide with amazement. "How rude of me! Here I am going on and on without giving you a chance to respond. Have you ridden any carousels of late?"
"Just once when I was very little. My dad took me to a carnival. That was about a year before....." Her voice trailed off before she quickly changed the subject. "I wish I had seen the ones you have! They all sound so wonderful!"
Anastasia thought for a moment. "Perhaps you can. I made sure to take many photos of every carousel I visited. I have entire albums full of them! I'm sure my parents wouldn't mind if you came over to have a look."
Loretta's face brightened. "That sounds great!"
And with that, the two became nearly inseparable. They spent most of their time at Anastasia's house looking through her albums, reading books, planning trips and even designing their own ideas for new carousel animals.
