This shouldn't be here... you think as you gaze up in shock at the massive structure before you. You've hiked through this area countless times and never seen anything like it. Even its placement seems completely random. No trees have been cleared nor is there any road or pathway guiding to it as if it was simply picked up and dropped here with little thought.
"The Great Library of Nexus" the sign reads in medieval-looking script. You've never heard of such a place, especially not in the middle of the forest. The stone building looks more like a grand cathedral than a library. Gargoyles and grotesques glare down from their perches, towers topped with steeple-like structures point towards the sky and arched windows line the buttressed walls including a huge circular stained glass window featuring a floral motif that hangs high above the front entryway. A pair of griffon statues guard the wooden double doors which are adorned with intricate carvings and symbols you don't recognize.
Despite all of your common sense telling you otherwise, you feel a strange need to explore it. It's as if you were meant to find it and rejecting it would be an unforgivable betrayal. You consider attempting to look through some of the many windows but the old-fashioned glass warps your view. Surely just poking your head in for a moment wouldn't hurt.
You slowly climb the stone steps trying to avoid the griffons' sightless gaze then gently pull on one of the carved door handles. Much to your surprise, the massive door glides open easily allowing you to tentatively step inside.
A lightly sweet, musty smell wraps around you as you enter. You stand in awe of the huge open room filled with bookshelves placed in a haphazard, but somehow organized manner. A few yards ahead of you is a large open area where a large ornate antique-looking desk sits that you surmise belongs to the librarian or receptionist. More shelves line the walls as well as various kinds of art in the forms of tapestries, murals and framed paintings. Tall, twisting ornate staircases allow access to the upper floors. Sconces holding large candles are strategically placed on the walls and chandeliers hang from metal chains to provide ample nighttime lighting. Natural light pours through the windows creating a colorful rippled effect across the interior. Looking up, you see the arched ceiling painted in a similar style to the Sistine Chapel but with bizarre scenes that make you uneasy if you stare too long.
"Can I help you?"
A musical but stern voice breaks you from your reverie. You turn to see a tall, beautiful woman dressed like a steampunk convention attendee in her simple white blouse with a leather corset, black pants and tall boots. Her long, wavy red hair is loosely tied back and a pair of golden spectacles graces her already lovely face.
"Can I help you?" she repeats impatiently.
You stumble over your words trying to both explain and ask what's going on. Completely nonplussed by your anxiety she casually leans against her desk and begins cleaning her glasses, looking bored.
"I see. Well, feel free to look around. Just be careful with the manuscripts on the third floor. They're quite old and you'll need gloves to handle them. Don't remove anything from the library without permission and do NOT attempt to enter any locked rooms. If you have any questions or concerns let me know." She sits back down at her desk and returns to whatever activity she was doing before your arrival. You get the feeling she's repeated that list of rules many times.
Not wanting to pester the librarian any longer you begin moving between the shelves, eyeing the subject plaques. You stop at a shelf labeled "Worlds Histories" and check some of the titles. Life and Times of Arfelian Nobility reads one. Another is titled Lord Garlfrak and the Great Kozmik Tethering. Several other books are in languages you've never seen and you even recognize some books you're familiar with. It's so bizarre to see normal books among these others.
You take a step back to try to regain your bearings. Just what kind of library is this?
