It was a day like any other day, bright blue and not a cloud in the sky. All the gems were assigned their tasks and patrols for the day ahead. Wolframite and Elbaite, paired together since the first days they were born, were once again sent to patrol the cliffs area of the island. They enjoyed patrolling this area, standing high on the cliffs the view always amazed them. But they enjoyed being with Elbaite even more.

The wind danced through the open field the gem pair walked in. The grass swayed, the birds fluttering along. It was a calm day, nothing more exciting than a piece of rock falling away from the cliff-side. Wolframite sighed. As much as an uneventful day was the best kind of day, it did get boring after a while. Even just one Sunspot helped with the monotony.
Behind them, Elbaite pranced over. "Maybe one will show up today, Wolf." They always knew what Wolframite was thinking, considering they had been paired for more than 100 years. They worked together perfectly, and knew how each other fought in battles. Wolframite excelled extremely well in battle, thrived in it really. They were no Bortz to be fair, but they were good. Elbaite was good too, a bit aloof at times, but still fought fiercely when needed. Though today wasn't a day that would be eventful. It was just... a day.
The next morning the pair was sent to help collect resources for the other gems. Wolframite was the only one who could travel for long periods of time in the ocean without risk of damage, being insoluble and a very heavy metal instead of a crystal - so long as they didn't go too deep and too dark of course. Placing their sword on the beach, Wolframite grabbed a bowl and walked into the water. "See you in a bit El." Elbaite waved happily, also holding their own bowl to collect other items at the shoreline, all while humming quietly to themselves.
They enjoyed being underwater, - sad that El couldn't join them, but they always made sure to bring a little present back to the surface with them - and all the little fish and other sea life were wonderful to look at. Everything floated; swam about without a care in the world. They were a little jealous of the fish, looking like they could fly. What it would be like if they could fly among the clouds. But being as extremely heavy as they were, Wolframite was very much land bound.
Little by little, Wolf collected the few things needed from the ocean and started to head back. It took a while, and by the time they could see the sloping beaches, it was well past midday. Then they heard it, a garbled cry through the water. Looking upwards they saw it, the Lunarians were here, and they weren't there with El.
Panic set in. 'No no no no!' Wolf dropped their bowl and all its contents and ran as fast as they could for the surface. Their weight made moving faster difficult, each heavy step dug into the soft sand deeply. 'Curses! Why am I so dang heavy! Why today of all days!' When they finally broke the surface of the water they got to see how bad it was. Elbaite was missing their left arm, it was jagged, and the rest was no were to be seen. Wolframite raced over to their own sword to help. "El! I'm here!" They shouted. El was so far away.
Mistake.
Elbaite whipped around to see Wolf, a tiny smile on their face. The Lunarians claimed this moment of distraction and sliced the gems head off. They shattered into pieces. The tiny smile never left their face as greedy hands wrapped themselves around they body. Wolf knew terror that day. They screamed.
The moved as fast as their legs could take them, leaving deep foot steps in the ground as they ran. They would not take El from them, not if they could help it. And help would not be here fast enough. Wolframite leaped towards the retreating Lunarians, desperate to get get their friend back. But they came prepared. With a swift motion, the largest Lunarian cut Wolframites arm off with their own sword. Made of diamond.
Wolframite fall back down to earth and landed harder than expected. Their own weight turning against them, snapping their legs cleanly in two. They were devastated, and could only watch as they slowly flew out of sight and vanished. If they knew what crying was, or even were able to, there would be tears. They were always together. Elbaite was so important to them.
What were they going to do now?

Standing on the beach weeks later, Wolframite clutched the only piece of Elbaite they had left. It was so hard, existing without them. They experienced a new emotion now. Guilt. Guilt over not getting there soon enough. For not saving them. It ate at them every day. Then they started thinking about 'what if's'. What if they waited for the Lunarians to come and take them too. Would they see El again? Do they even want them since they weren't a gem?
They took a few steps into the water. What if... they met them halfway? Wolf looked around. No other gems in sight. They would stop them, try to comfort them. It wasn't something they wanted. They wanted El.
So they walked along the bottom of the ocean, surrounded by jellyfish and other creatures. They never got to show El these. Maybe they'll bring some to the moon. Elbaite would love that. With each step Wolf grew ever more tired. The ocean growing darker and darker until finally they could no longer see the light. Instead tiny specks floated around them, not unlike the stars that dotted the skies. 'I must be close to the moon now. Maybe now they will see me.'
Exhausted, they fell to their knees. 'So tired. Maybe... I will have a nap. Then I will keep going..' Wolframite lied down, cradling the shard they cherished close to their chest and fell asleep.

And was never seen from again.
