You wander along the tree-line that borders Peka Park, profiting from the shade of the forest beside you, taking deep breaths of the fresh, woody-air. There's a dampness on the ground, and occasionally a rustle in the undergrowth causes you to turn and peer between the trunks in an attempt to catch a glimpse of whatever little animals are about, but they're either very small, or very clever at hiding, because you never quite manage to see one.

After a moment you realise that it's not many small animals, but just one, that is seemingly keeping pace beside you. You decide to stop, and crouch, and try to seem as nonthreatening as possible, hoping that this will pique the little creature's curiosity. It's certainly very timid, and you end up sitting on the grass for what seems like ages before you notice movement quite close to you, just on the edge of vision. You turn your head a little, to see what looks like a budding tree-sprout on the grass, where you are sure there wasn't one before.

Slowly, very slowly, the sprout creeps closer, using its root tendrils to almost slither across the ground. It's only small, with pale green, fleshy leaves, that form a corona around the bottom of the flower-bud then trail down its back like a sort of mohawk. It reaches your knee and small, slightly scratchy, twig-like fingers, brush over your skin. The beautiful gold-yellow bud tilts back as the creature raises it's big dark eyes to look quizzically up at you. It has small fangs, and you suppose that it might seem a bit intimidating (or maybe even scary) when full grown, but right now it just looks a little afraid.

You smile and, ever so gently, extend a hand for the creature to sniff. It pulls back at first, its hands slipping from your leg - a sweet sensation, like a bird had been perched there and flown away - and you notice the leaves along its back rising up like a dog on guard. After a moment it seems to realise that you mean it no harm, and tentatively pushes its forehead against your fingers. You tilt your head as you softly brush your fingertips over its leaves.

"Hello, little one."
