Monsters had always been a thing of mystery; their birth, their death, and the rare variant of creature that lived so long and became so powerful it was put into its own class; the Elder Dragons.
For years they had crossed the seas; made migrations that seemed to make little sense, to a mysterious and uncharted continent in the middle of a vast ocean. In truth, they had been making this journey to finally die. Drawn to this graveyard, by instinct and the thought of eternal rest, they took their final breaths in a place void of anything other than decay and hunger. A place where the bones of hundreds of other monsters now rest, making up a vast majority of the landscape with their massive forms.
It was here, in such a terrifying place, that their spirits and very essence could give life to the vast ecosystems around it. Over time the energy they released flowed on and created a strange new environment. One where power radiated so strongly that it changed the landscape visually. Power-imbued crystals grew from nearly every surface, creating massive spires big enough and overlapping enough that one may walk on them if they choose. It was a harsh landscape, if not just for the lava filled caverns, but for the kind of attention it attracted. Not only did it attract incredibly powerful monsters, some of which were unheard of in this new continent, but as time went on they seemed to become agitated and behaved abnormally.
Though the initial cause seemed to have been from an Elder Dragon that fed exclusively on other Elder Dragons, the slaying of this creature didn't help to calm the growing storm of chaos. This begged the question, why did this place exist, and what was disturbing the Elder Dragons? It was so deeply imbued with power that a source must have existed. It seemed to be coming from somewhere, but where? And after a long investigation, they discovered it. Deep within these crystal caverns was a power so immense that it seemed to be a living thing, and so it was. A creature so strange and alien; so powerful, the likes of which had never been sighted before. It had slept; no, it had grown here for who knows how long. In the womb of the Earth, drawing power from every death on these lands. Taking in energy and warping the very ecosystem around it. It had stayed hidden for millennia, slowly feeding, growing, and possibly even drawing in the dying Elder Dragons with its own power.
And yet truly, it was only an infant. An infant larger than most Elder Dragons as a whole. Awakened by the presence of something living in its home it was birthed perhaps far too soon into a world it was not ready for, and yet its power was so immense that its very presence was a threat to everyone and everything living beyond its nest. It had to be stopped, it had to be slain, before it destroyed everything above. And so it was, and it fell deep within the bowels of the Earth, never to see the light of day. But if this thing was created by power, in a place where energy flowed into the Earth, who is to say that it cannot be reborn again?
